Prohibition-themed party warms new home for socially engaged theater with live jazz & period costumes in elegant, historic space
It’s easy to come up with the perfect evening for two—just imagine your perfect evening alone and then double it. Pair up with today’s deal to the Beginning of the Big Time event, presented by the National Pastime Theater at the Preston Bradley Center on Tuesday, February 14, at 7 p.m. For $30, you get two general-admission tickets (up to a $60 value).
Dedicated to creating socially engaging works of drama, the National Pastime Theater cuts loose and celebrates its move to the Preston Bradley Center in the Uptown Entertainment District with a Prohibition-era ball. Dressed in optional period attire, pairs Charleston into the former Masonic Hall to the jazzy strains of Fred Barr’s Organ-ized Sound. Bites from chef Steve Madjar pair with BYOB bottles, accessorized with a full slate of mixers and other alcoholic accouterments. As a parade of historically appropriate entertainment takes the stage, bootleggers ooh and ah at the venue’s original murals, neoclassical columns, and art deco chandeliers dating to 1925, well before the EPA’s current standards for architectural beauty levels were put in place. All proceeds from the event go toward the continued renovation of the space, which will include installing a 300-seat theater and searching for valuable comic books hidden by previous tenants.
