Like Jacob Marley’s ghost dragging gold and platinum chains, Rock The Bells 2012 heralds hip-hop’s past, present, and future with a lineup of some of rap’s biggest names. Across two days and two outdoor stages at the PNC Bank Arts Center, the festival’s ninth anniversary celebration fills the air with shredded rhyming dictionaries. Among Saturday’s surplus of bass, beats, and linguistics, fabled MCs such as DMX and Eve, Jadakiss, and Big Sean take over the Rock The Bells stage, where fans can also savor a 20th-anniversary performance by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. On the 36 Chambers stage, Method Man and Redman woo with a Wu-Tang-flavored set, Naughty By Nature check into the audience’s affiliation with O.P.P., and Ice Cube spits hardcore West Coast nails with tracks from his latest album, Everything’s Corrupt.

Sunday keeps the pace with afternoon sets from legends such as Big Daddy Kane and British eye-patch aficionado Slick Rick. The evening brings about a slew of hip-hop’s heaviest hitters, including multi-Grammy-winning rapper and actor Common, Roc Nation’s J. Cole, and a headlining performance by veteran vocal funambulist Nas, whose latest album, Life is Good, continues his habit of topping the Billboard charts.

Since the wealth of talent and the restrictions of the space-time continuum cause some performances to overlap, audiences can plan their day using a preliminary list of set times. To avoid getting lost between stages, a handy map gives a bird’s-eye view of the Rock The Bells playground. Between performances, fans can pick up music, art, and apparel at the Guerilla Union Merchandise tent, cool off in the Boost Mobile Lounge, and refuel at the Monster Energy Experience Tent.
