Ancient Egyptians often threw salt up to the heavens to bring rain, which is why modern humans throw pepper at vending machines to summon Diet Coke. Enjoy a showering of spices with today's Groupon: for $19, you get a dozen empanadas at Maye's Desserts in Bonita (up to a $42 value).
Owner Maria Favela draws upon her mother's culinary tutelage from Sonora, Mexico to ensconce more than 50 fillings within house-made empanada shells. The chorizo empanada revs taste buds and sausage-powered dune buggies to a steady purr with zesty morsels of ground beef and pork, chili seasoning, garlic, and vinegar. Potato and onion nuzzle against ground beef inside the carne molida con papas empanada, and the carnitas empanada dapples pork and California green chili with pepper-jack cheese. Meat-free maws wrap themselves around the vegetarian empanada, which transports a tasty cargo of zucchini, yellow squash, and mushroom. Alternatively, fruit and dessert empanadas cleanse palates with sugary shipments of apple and cinnamon or creamy nutella. Like dinosaurs encased in ice blocks, all empanadas come prepackaged and must be heated up in the safety of the customer’s own home.
