Almost half of the vendors left halfway through the event. It was very disappointing and seemed more like a trade show than a night out. I will not be attending again.
  • Try wines from around the world
  • Winemakers present at event
  • Reserve bottles at VIP tasting

Wines, like a comfortable T-shirt or a hard candy left to ripen under the couch, only get better with age. Taste the passing of time with today's Groupon to the 2011 Pittsburgh Wine Festival. The tasting events will be held on Thursday, May 5, at Heinz Field. Choose between the following options:

  • For $65, you get one ticket to the grand tasting (a $125 value).
  • For $125, you get one ticket to the VIP tasting (a $250 value).

The ninth annual Pittsburgh Wine Festival brings together the fermented offerings of producers from France, Italy, the United States, Chile, and beyond. Wineries in attendance include California's Dominus Estate, the champagne house of Louis Roederer, and Carpineto of Italy.

Tasting events allow guests to sample sips while meeting knowledgeable winemakers and winery representatives. The grand tasting opens its oak doors to curious oenophiles from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., whereas the VIP tasting, which is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., allows a maximum of 800 diehard samplers to partake in special and reserve wines not available at the grand tasting for reasons of national security. VIP tasters will receive a complimentary glass and are invited to remain for the duration of the grand tasting as well. Both events sate aural senses with audible entertainment while plying stomachs with food offerings, including cheeses, crackers, spreads, hot appetizers, and a selection of main courses. Give today's Groupon as a gift and share the fermented grape juice magic with someone you love or someone you want to love you.

About 2011 Pittsburgh Wine Festival

The Pittsburgh Wine Festival gathers more than 165 vendors who pour more than 500 diverse wines inside the Heinz Field East and West Club Lounges. Though many of the featured wines hail from countries such as France, Germany, Portugal, Argentina, and New Zealand, others call California, Pennsylvania, and the Pacific Northwest their home. As attendees wander between sips of reds, whites, and rosés, they sample food pairings and watch live entertainment.

Winery representatives and winemakers pour their diverse libations during the annual Grand Tasting, but also uncork specialty reserve wines at a VIP tasting. Here, smaller crowds grant visitors more time to speak with the vendors, and ask questions about fermentation or how to determine whether a wine will get along with their other bottles. Outside the main events, industry leaders also hold seminars on how to taste wine like a sommelier or pair wines to specific occasions. Additionally, private wine dinners raise funds for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
