Rhythm! Discovery Center
The first thing visitors hear when they step into Rhythm! Discovery Center is the sound of a beating heart. It's an appropriate introduction to the center, which believes rhythm and music are tied directly to the human experience. Across its four main halls, exhibits showcase percussion and its role in world cultures, starting with the evolution of drums from animal membranes, wood, and finally into metal These aren't typical museum exhibits, however; they're interactive experiences. Visitors can strike an eight-foot gong drum, feeling its vibration shake through their bodies and the marshmallows stuffed between their cheeks. More than 150 globally sourced instruments––such as African talking drums and ocean drums––create a thunderstorm within the interactive area. An extension of the Percussive Arts Society, Rhythm! Discovery Center often hosts college and professional performances within its acoustically sound confines. They also maintain a wealth of percussion information online, but ask that virtual visitors refrain from hitting their computer with a mallet.
Percussive Arts Society
More than 50 years old and 8,500 members strong, the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) strives to promote percussion through education, research, and performances across the world. To carry out this mission, the organization includes more than 50 chapters in the US and 28 chapters abroad, all of which communicate online via resources such as lessons, free practice exercises, and annual events. Each year PAS hosts the annual Percussive Arts Society International Convention—the largest of its kind in the world—in which exhibitors convene to showcase the newest developments in percussion technology, instruments, and publications. The convention also includes over 120 clinics and performances with lauded artists covering all genres and styles of music.
Perhaps the most enjoyable part of the center is its interactive area, designed to let visitors of all ages play instruments from around the worldCherie Yurco, Making Music Magazine
