The San Francisco Dungeon
You should have known there's no such thing as a free drink. The saloon's proprietor, Miss Piggott, seemed nice enough—if in need of a new hairstylist and a friend to tell her that soot is no substitute for eye shadow. But then you began to notice the strange sounds floating through the floorboards, and the strange man sneaking out from a trapdoor. Things went downhill from there—and now you're trapped on a boat with a man named Shanghai Kelly, who intends on selling his new "recruits" as workers for nearby ships.
Miss Piggott, Shanghai Kelly, and many other unsavory characters all inhabit the San Francisco Dungeon, which condenses 200 years of San Francisco's history into a one-hour fun adventure by removing all but the most spooky bits. The journey takes visitors through nine live-action shows as well as the aforementioned boat ride. Along the way, they're surrounded by 360-degree sets that recreate everything from Alcatraz to early San Francisco's gang-filled streets.
Lest you get swept up in the past and end up in a time before your ride home was built, one of the dungeon's residents is always there to lead the way through the experience. Contra Costa Times praised the "terrific sets and costumes" and "super fun local actors," who, as SFGate put it, "bring a Broadway-esque level of enthusiasm to their performance."
