West Harlem Art Fund
In 2011, a visit to Times Square meant an encounter with 24 life-size, hand-crafted paper sheep. The spectacle, which was dubbed "Counting Sheep", was the creation of Brooklyn-based artist Kyu Seok Oh, who told DNAinfo he hoped it would help people relax in Times Square's chaotic neon landscape.
Oh was able to display his work there thanks to the West Harlem Art Fund, an organization devoted to making art accessible to the public. Under the auspices of head curator Savona Bailey-McClain, WHAF is currently showing more than 15 artists' work in public places throughout the city. But the organization doesn't just bring art to the people—they also bring the people to art. Guided tours—which are often led by ground-breaking artists—introduce locals and visitors to some of New York's best galleries and installations and allow them to explore the artistic side of the city's diverse neighborhoods.
