With more than 25 years of experience, board-certified Liviu B. Saimovici, MD, of Saimovici Lasik uses modern treatment systems to bestow fuzzy viewers with clear vision. LASIK eye surgery, a laser surgery procedure, helps patients permanently reduce their reliance on glasses and contacts, improving such ailments as nearsightedness, astigmatism, and the inability to differentiate between a TV remote and the family cat. Under the control of Dr. Saimovici, a LASIK laser changes the shape of a patient's cornea—the dome-shaped tissue in the front of the eye—to bend lights rays more precisely on the retina. Today's offer permits customers to receive treatment in one or both eyes, allowing lens-toting patrons to correct dual eye problems or farsighted Cyclopes to save money on mail-order monocles.
When Paul Melella, Jr. was seven years old, he was the target of a neighborhood bully. Eventually, Paul’s mother enrolled him in martial arts classes. For six months, Paul secretly studied the art of tae kwon do, until one day, he finally had the courage to stand up to his bully. Not only did the boy stop picking on Paul, they became good friends. In fact, Paul was even the best man at his wedding years later, where he helped out by cutting the cake with one swift roundhouse kick.
Paul established the Carmel branch of United Martial Arts Centers in 1996 to help others attain the same self-confidence and lifelong benefits that he found practicing martial arts as a child. Today, Paul is just one of UMAC's many professional instructors who lead programs for children, adults, and families at five different locations. Despite their different addresses, each of UMAC's locations sports the same positive atmosphere and spirit that comes from students working together toward a common goal.
The Schoolhouse Theater really did start as an elementary school. But in 1983, founder Lee Pope turned it into a visual arts center. And four years later, she invited the New York company Acorn Productions to put on a show in the auditorium. That play did more than pack the house—it also signaled the former school's birth as a haven for community theater.
Since then, The Schoolhouse Theater has developed the second part of its moniker. Theatrical amenities were added and theatrical ghosts politely asked to leave, and in 1998, the building was officially designated as a non-profit, professional regional theater. Along with stateside premieres and revivals of beloved classics, the company has staged productions that have successfully rocketed their way to Off Broadway. And while the space has now moved on from its grade-school days, it continues its educational legacy by hosting classes on topics such as photography and dance.
