Dr. Brian Stenzler, owner of D.R.E.A.M. Wellness, is a one-man who’s-who of chiropractic. As a student, he took a trip to Panama where he spent some time straightening spines pro-bono before performing an adjustment for then first-lady, Dora Boyd Perez Balladares. He flew back to The States where he finished his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 1998, just before graduating Summa cum Laude with a Masters in sports health science in 1999. Two years later, the Red Cross recognized him for his work at ground zero during 9/11, and in 2003 he was named New York Chiropractor of the Year by The New York Chiropractic Council.

And those were just the first five years of his career.

Since then, he’s shepherded a veritable hit parade of professional athletes, celebrities, and politicians back to health, including the likes of Junior Seau, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Orin Hatch. After a cross-continental move to California—where he promptly became the president of the California chiropractic Association—Dr. Stenzler opened the west-coast office of his practice, D.R.E.A.M. Wellness.

The core philosophy of D.R.E.A.M. Wellness is that true wellbeing is much more than simply being free of pain, disease, and sickness. The staff aims to harmonize physical, mental, social, and spiritual wellbeing by emphasizing five particular areas of health, which is where the name D.R.E.A.M. comes in: diet, relaxation, exercise, adjustment, and mental wellbeing. These five facets of wellness have inform the growing number of treatments they offer at their clinic, which includes chiropractic work, massages, nutrition programs, pilates, and more.

Justin Fassio earned his personal-training certification during his time in the military, when his passion for exercise landed him the chance to lead a physical training program for an Air Force?operations group. Once his time in the force was up, he didn't leave his love of fitness back at base?he brought it home with him. Today, he leads outdoor fitness programs for all citizens.

Nutritionist Rachel Bowman has a background in Clinical and Holistic Nutrition, offering a wide acumen of current nutritional research. Her career now emphasizes weight management in all walks of life, ranging from digestive health to healthy eating while traveling. Her sports enthusiasm has also forged professional relationships with athletes and key athletic trainers.

The partnership of the two is ideal at San Diego Core Fitness, where staffers emphasize that fitness and nutrition always work hand-in-hand. The varied boot-camp workouts fuse fun and motivation with functional training techniques designed to help build up neglected core muscles and regain muscular balance. Personal-training sessions are supplemented with nutritional advice and lifestyle counseling, and keeps semiprivate training sessions small so that each participant can receive individual attention. During outdoor boot camps, groups make use of whatever the locations offer as equipment?depending on the scenery, they wade through deep beach sand, run up open-air stairs, and bench-press park benches.

The small empire that is Whisknladle Hospitality started with a serendipitous meeting of French Laundry vet Ryan Johnston and aspiring restaurateur?and undaunted cooking-school dropout?Arturo Kassel. Their vision? Gourmet comfort food, with none of the guilty excess that term might imply. Just about every ingredient at Whisknladle, down to buttermilk dressings and canadian bacon, would be prepared from scratch, filling a menu that would change with the finest gradations of the seasons. "We want to find that balance of making our guests comfortable and pulling one foot out of their comfort zone," Johnston recently told San Diego Magazine?which means the french toast might exude lemon and lavender and the fried chicken might nest on purslane.

In a 2008 review, the Union-Tribune described "delightful, soul-satisfying" dishes such as "juicy, perfectly roasted chicken" at "one of the most exciting restaurants in San Diego." The crowds agreed. So Johnston and Kassel decided to expand the experience, inspired, as their website says, "by our desire to eat Whisknladle-quality food on a regular basis while sticking to our restaurant-employee budgets." Prepkitchen is a little simpler and more casual, but dishes such as porter-braised short rib and biscuits with chorizo gravy prove the new venture takes the same care as the original when it comes to sourcing ingredients and clearly labeling sugar and salt containers.

Among its two facilities in La Jolla and downtown San Diego, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego houses an array of works made since 1950. Head here and you can explore everything from Pop Art and minimalism of the 1960s and 1970s to conceptual pieces from the last half-century, headlined by contemporary-art luminaries such as Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei.

Major figures aside, the MCASD strives to spotlight mid-career artists still looking for their big break, as well as pieces by Latin American artists and emergent talent. Between the museum's collection and rotating exhibitions, there are galleries that accommodate paintings, photographs, films, and multimedia installations. Outside both locations, there are more site-specific installations and sculptures by artists such as Richard Serra and Marcos Ramírez ERRE, whose father created the Caps Lock on the day his son was born.

There’s more to the place than its exhibitions: the museum engages visitors with events and programs such as art-making sessions and artist lectures. Held three evenings a year, the Thursday Night Thing series includes talks, hands-on activities, live music, and cocktails, all based on the latest museum exhibitions.

When twin sisters Izzy and Coco Tihanyi decided to pursue a career that combined their passion for surfing and their love of the ocean, their calling came in the form of starting Surf Diva. Before long, they were on course to becoming a lauded school for coed surfers in California and Costa Rica. Augmenting the pair's teachings is their team of certified instructors, all graduates of their school's intensive training program and certified in CPR and first aid. Committed to their expertise in surfing, many of the instructors also hold down careers as firefighters, paramedics, and snowboarders, granting them the combined know-how to put out beach bonfires with a casual backflip.

The team's instruction ranges from coed group lessons and competitive coaching sessions to two- or five-day women’s weekend surf clinics. When they're not teaching surfing, crew members commit themselves to alternative teaching programs in yoga and standup paddleboarding, helping surfers to conquer the water with their bodies as well as with their very buoyant hearts. The twins' Costa Rica program also helps women and families hone boarding skills abroad while becoming fully immersed in the Costa Rican culture.
