  • Mel's Diner
Though the walls at Original Mel's Diner are decked out in 1950s memorabilia, the eatery dates back to the 1940s, making its throwback aesthetic something of a natural development and not purely a put-on. The diner also owns another indelible link to the golden age of diners: in 1973, George Lucas featured the restaurant in American Graffiti, his iconic paean to all things swell. The restaurant?s screen time didn?t end there; it would later serve as the setting for the sitcom Alice, as well as the famous breakfast laser shootout in Return of the Jedi. True to its roots, the eatery's massive menu carries the torch for classic eats. Its bounteous American staples include steaks, third-pound burgers, sandwiches, all-day breakfast. While rocking out to '50s and '60s music from table jukeboxes, diners can sink teeth into Hawaiian burgers with teriyaki-glazed pineapple or cheesesteak hoagies, piled high with grilled sirloin steak, jalapeno, and pepperoncini. Fries come topped with gravy, garlic, cheese, or chili. An ice cream parlor-style dessert menu boasts ice cream sundaes, hand-dipped milkshakes and malts that hearken back to the days when soda jerks still roamed the earth. A banquet room fit for celebrating birthdays, team gatherings, and more seats up to 50 people.

  • Heinzelmannchen Brewery
Rooted in Black Forest tradition, the Heinzelmännchen Brewery was founded by Dieter Kuhn, who as a young boy in Germany used to fetch his family's beer from the local brauhaus. Get a peek at beer’s birthing process with a guided stroll through the brewery. A tour guide (frequently the head brewer himself, although there are no guarantees) explains the Heinzelmännchen brewing system and equipment while delineating how each piece of machinery works, what it produces, and what its favorite Winston Churchill quotes are. Tours take place Monday–Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and can last between 5 and 20 minutes. After the tour, each participant can taste eight beer samples which vary day to day. Samples may include the pilsner-style Ancient Days honey blonde ale; the smooth, toffee-accented Middleworld brown ale; and the creamy, thick-headed Black Forest stout. Each carousing couple also goes home with two souvenir pint glasses and one Novum growler, a deceptively friendly jug-shaped transporter of beer perfect for hikes, ornithology retreats, and gingerbread-man hunts. Fill up the growler for an additional fee, but please note the pint glasses cannot be filled up at the brewery.

Travel back to a time when societies dined underwater with a seafaring starter, such as the crabmeat-stuffed mushrooms with a homemade crabmeat dressing ($8.95), or the shrimp cocktail with tender shrimp smothered in cocktail sauce ($8.95). Instead of whipping up a crayon soufflé, grub-hankering youngsters can be sated by noshing on an entree from the children's menu, such as the fried chicken tenders, deep-fried shrimp, or cheeseburger ($6.95 each). Built in 1939, the dining room features a wood fireplace, exposed wood accents, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering a pristine woodland view.
