  • Eugene Opera
"Eugene Opera," wrote the Eugene Weekly in a 2013 profile, "is helping make opera relevant to 21st-century Oregon." But the company isn't just working on creating a new generation of fans, it's pushing the future of the art form forward. To that end it stages daring contemporary works that present relevant social issues, from the examination of the prison system in Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking to the study of mythology in John Adams' Nixon in China. Yet it certainly hasn't forgotten the classics. Since its debut performance of Carmen in 1976 the opera regularly sprinkles its seasons with hallowed works by the likes of Stephen Sondheim and Puccini. Contemporary works aren't the only way the company looks forward, either. Their Artist Mentor Program sends members of the opera chorus into the community to interact with students and young musicians, while the Eugene Opera Academy gives high schoolers with interest in any element of the productions a chance to get their hands dirty.

  • Hosanna Dance Studio
Tiese Morgan took over Hosanna Dance Studio in 1995, infusing the school with her lifetime of experience and vision of dance as a worshipful act. She started annual performances of Adventures in Narnia and founded the Hosanna Youth Performers company, giving her young dancers a chance to shine on stage rather than just in the classroom. She supplemented these news performance opportunities by increasing the variety of dance classes and the age range of students. Now, she and her staff teach everything from ballet and tap to modern and hip hop to kids, adults, and everyone in between.

  • Zumba Monmouth at The Dance Studio
Zumba Monmouth at The Dance Studio’s trio of footloose instructors—Elaine, Jeanette, and Janey—shimmy and shake up normal workout routines with heart-pumping, muscle-toning, and fun-inducing dance moves. Mirror reflections dance a combo of cumbia, merengue, and salsa steps as their owners flambé calories and tone muscles to Latin-inspired music and international beats infused with a club vibe. Since the goal is to keep moving, rather than to execute a perfect tour jeté or an impressive head spin, students need no experience to drop in whenever the urge to samba strikes. The studio modifies traditional Zumba with low-impact varieties that ease strain on joints and set a good example for orbiting asteroids with big ideas. Zumba Gold sessions open up the dance floor for older students, and Zumbatomic classes set kids aged 8–12 on the path to fitness.

  • DEFY Aerial Fitness Studio
At DEFY Aerial Fitness Studio, exercisers dangle from cascading strips of silk and pull off airborne feats of acrobatic prowess on low trapeze bars during exhilarating workouts. Small groups hover above the ground, stretching limbs into graceful motions that strengthen cores. Instructors also lead workshops that impart martial arts and Parkour techniques, such as vaulting, balancing, and quadrupedal movements that dramatically increase the chances of escaping an orangutan pursuit, unless that orangutan also studied Parkour. In addition to their regular class schedule, instructors host an open gym session that gives students time to practice their skills and further stick it to gravity.
