Through its rotating lineup of exhibits and engaging events, MUZEO—which means “museum” in the international language of Esperanto—fosters diversity and cross-cultural understanding by making culture accessible to every member of the community. The 25,000-square-foot complex encompasses the original 1908 Carnegie Library as well as a brand-new art-gallery space, and it plays host to three different traveling exhibitions per year. One current offering, Spies, Traitors, and Saboteurs: Freedom in America, produced by the International Spy Museum and running through Monday, September 16, 2013, mines the rich history of international espionage and its current role in our nation. Though two free docent tours are offered with admission on Saturdays and Sundays, most visitors peruse the exhibits at their own pace. Check out the calendar of events to view museum goings-on by date.

In an effort to create violence-free homes, Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center (CAPC) works to stop the generational cycle of child abuse. Through in-home visits and mental-health counseling, it teaches at-risk families how to replace parenting that may lead to abuse and neglect with healthy, positive parenting styles, promoting self-sufficiency and nurturing parent-child relationships.

CAPC caseworkers use 14 intervention-style programs to alleviate family stress and eliminate negative parenting techniques that could lead to child abuse. They work with high-risk families to promote positive parenting with infants and toddlers, teach teens about healthy dating choices, and reach out to families in which abuse is suspected. Parent-to-parent workshops connect families to help them learn from one another, whereas in-home mental-health services and crisis stabilization for suicidal or homicidal children help reduce violence in already fractured homes.

MeoowzResQ rescues cats and kittens and raises them in private foster homes until they can find forever families. The more than 200 cats available for adoption range from bottle-fed babies to senior citizens, many of whom have been abused, injured, or found abandoned in boxes on the sidewalk or as survivors of fire. Volunteer foster families provide litter, a warm bed, and food for the cats, and each feline receives full vaccinations, de-worming treatment, and a spay or neutering treatment. Many of the cats come from shelters with rampant disease and require veterinary care and medications. In 2012 alone, MeoowzResQ placed 1,485 cats and kittens in loving permanent homes.

The Orange County Ronald McDonald House provides low-cost, comfortable lodging for families with seriously ill children who are receiving medical care in Orange County hospitals. Each family staying at the house has a private room and bath, and can access shared areas including a fully stocked kitchen, laundry room, and lounge areas. Although the actual cost for a family to stay for one night is approximately $150, families are asked to pay $10 per day—though no one is turned away due to an inability to pay. Housing costs are largely funded by donations.
