In 35 years of dancing, including performances at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre and Opera House, instructor Heik Hambarzumian has learned that comfort and confidence trump melodrama. Heik prefers to focus on style rather than overdone movements and channels his experience as a musician to demonstrate organic, fluid responses to rhythm. He coaches his students on pursuing general grace regardless of the type of dance being taught; and at Dance Like a Star Studio, he teaches styles including waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha, salsa, tango, and swing.
He leads his classes atop a 3,800-square-foot floor that slightly gives each time a foot or space shuttle lands upon it. Beginner and intermediate dancers share the space as they socialize and twirl during group classes. Heik also hosts private lessons, helping couples master wedding-dance choreography or preparing contenders for upcoming competitions.
