Our server was on the ball. The manager was circulating in the room; we were able to talk with him several minutes about his vision of Threadgill's. The food was delicious, especially the spinach casserole (really!) and the jalepeno corn muffins. We were even given seconds on the spinach.

The kids seem to love the broccoli rice casserole. The salisbury steak has an actual steak taste to it - pretty good.

All good, home cooked style food. The Chicken Livers are massive and served with Cream Gravy. Love the San Antonio Squash, also!

Service was friendly and prompt but some of the things I ask for did not get delivered properly. The real appeal to threadgill's is the nostalgia. If they improved their food quality it would much be more popular. The red beans and rice was not so good. Chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken where all just ok.

From Our Editors

Kenneth Threadgill stood in line all night to be the first person in Travis County to get a beer license. It was 1933, and the bootlegger and country-music connoisseur had plans to evolve his filling station into something bigger?though even Threadgill probably couldn't have anticipated how big it would become.

It started with touring musicians stopping in for drinks after their shows. By the ?60s, Janis Joplin was on stage, polishing her unpolished sound for crowds from all walks of life. The evolution continued, with Threadgill's hosting artists from Jerry Lee Lewis to Captain Beefheart and expanding into a Southern-style restaurant where the love of music ironed out disagreements and engendered an atmosphere of tolerance.

Today, the original location on North Lamar harks back to Threadgill's beginnings, with current owner Eddie Wilson decking the place out with decor that evokes the Austin of the 1930s to the 1960s, including vintage signs that say, ?I can?t wait for the internet to be invented.? The second location on West Riverside celebrates the 1970s music scene that thrived at the Armadillo?Wilson's former establishment at that location. At both venues, chefs churn out classic Southern food, such as chicken-fried steak and fried green tomatoes, while frequent live music entertains guests.

Austin Restaurant Guide

If it can be tossed on a grill and slathered in barbecue sauce, it probably can be found at one of the many Austin restaurants that keep things classically Texas. But even though the city may have made its culinary name with sweet, smoky briskets and ribs, new and not-so-new cooking styles have made Austin a foodie destination.

Thanks to the popularity of “Tex-Mex” cuisine, Matt’s El Rancho on South Lamar has managed to become an Austin institution for more than 60 years. Since that time, Tex-Mex dining in Austin has gone uptown with Nuevo Mexican restaurants such as Manuel’s, an upscale Mexican eatery located in downtown Austin, and Garrido’s, a Warehouse District spot that marries traditional Mexican cooking with modern techniques. Foodies who consider eating an adventure are flocking to newcomers on the Austin dining scene including The Afin Modern Japanese Tapas Bar on North Lamar Boulevard, which turns out stunning sushi creations, and Foreign & Domestic, on East 53rd Street, where they utilizes local ingredients to reinvent classic American dishes at this updated take on the diner. Newcomers Asia Café (Sichuan), Indian Spicy Kitchen (Indian) and Mi Kefcito (Cuban) are also worth checking out.

Still, barbecue reigns supreme among Austin food worshippers and one of the newest places is Franklin Barbecue on East 11th Street, recently named the best barbecue restaurant in the country by Bon Appetit magazine. Lines form early here (about 10 a.m.) and Franklin only serves lunch, so plan accordingly. Other places where the barbecue is popular include Live Oak Barbecue on East 2nd Avenue and longtime Austin favorites Stubbs, (located on Red River Street), Sam’s BBQ (on East 12th Street), and Ironworks BBQ (downtown Austin). From traditional Texas chow to unique Southwestern twists on international dishes, Austin is now one of the top favorites for unique taste adventures.
