I am very interested in old buildings and urban decay. I am also interested in atmospheric and somewhat haunted places. This together made Sloss Furnaces a must see for my trip to Birmingham. The first thing to note is that this site is free, which surprised and amazed me. I wanted to take some pictures for my own use. They like to question people about their picture taking, as I imagine there are people who have come to the site and sold some pictures that they taken there against the wishes of the establishment. All in all, it is not a big deal to talk to them about what you are planning. The site itself is very atmospheric and somewhat creepy, even in the middle of a warm winter day. There are plenty of places you can explore. While I was exploring one of the buildings I accidentally scared another guest coming around the corner of the building. It is that kind of experience. I cannot recommend a visit enough to Sloss Furnaces. It has a bit of something for everyone.

I'm an engineer. I grew up in an engineering family. I like industrial stuff. A visit to Sloss furnaces is a trip back to a time when America led the world in industrial stuff. In context with today's world of work... yes, the work was hard. Yes, the work was dangerous. Yes, the work was unhealthy. Yes, men were treated poorly. Yes, we've come a long ways with industrial work since Sloss. We learned how to better do work from places like Sloss. Go. Visit. Tour. See. Learn. Highly recommended.

OK, I admit this landmark will not hit the mark with everyone, but I loved it! The massive size of the furnace, the historical aspects of an industry so harsh and yet such an important part of the US becoming a world leader, the odd beauty of the structures rising into the sky...this gal finds the place super amazing. We arrived about 30 minutes prior to close on a rainy day and only had time for a quick walk through. We will definitely return in better weather and with ample time to walk the grounds and do the self-guided tour! I have heard ghost stories about this place on television, but honestly I felt nothing eerie as we walked around. I did feel a sense of sorrow for what I know had to have been hot and dangerous working conditions in a time when workers were pushed to their physical limits. We are looking forward to returning the next time we are in the area!
