Speaking with Apex bike mechanics is kind of like dealing with auto mechanics: guys who really know their stuff make recommendations for repairs you may (or may not) need to do right away. Depending on how well you know your own equipment and how often you ride, accepting their offer could save a ride, but might have been an investment you didn't need to make for 6 months or a year. It also might cost way more than you anticipated when you said, "yes, yes, yes - fix all of it." In the end, I will always take my bike to a qualified, knowledgeable mechanic.

Friendly service, knowledgable and prompt. Great tune-up. Old bike rode like it was brand new. Nice store too.

Great service! The owner gave me recommendations on what else can be done to maintain my bike. It rides perfectly smooth.

It's a very busy shop. Not much parking available if you're driving from out of the area and it's best to call ahead to schedule a time to drop off your bike.

I used to be a bicycIe mechanic in Suasalito. When I found a Groupon discount for a basic tune-up at Apex Cycles & Services in Davis, Calif. I couldn't pass up the deal, so, I called ahead before coming in with my wife's Trek 1600 road bike. When I got there I told Aaron that the brake pads were worn and that the drivetrain may need checking since my wife stays in only one gear. I wanted to replace the chain before the one cog gets worn down by chain stretch. Turn-around time was quick and my wife's Trek is running great. Thanks, Aaron. I'll be coming back again.

Just remember that the Groupon will pay for the LABOR ONLY, all parts are EXTRA! In addition to the Groupon (worth $25), which we paid $60 for 2 bike tuneups, our total bill came to $218.55, all for necessary items (new tires and Schrader Slime tubes for one bike, one new Schrader Slime tube for the second bike, 2 extra tubes, plus a new brake/shift cable). You should be prepared to pay for your new parts, which will be about the same price at any bike shop. Overall, a fine job by the lone bike shop owner/service tech, requiring 4 hours of his time for our two bikes! Because we live in Sacramento, we had a nice time walking down memory lane in Davis, including visiting old apartments we used to live in, and the university, reliving our college days from 40+ years ago. Thank you, Aaron, for a job well done!

From Our Editors

Behind a rough-hewn wooden fa?ade, walls embellished with wheels and cycles surround Apex Cycles & Services' solo employee, Aaron Curtin. While stocking the store with quality bikes and parts from brands such as Kona, Continental, and De Rosa, Aaron builds an excellent rapport with customers by executing thorough cycle services for almost all makes and models. Bike treatments range from basic tune-ups to comprehensive overhauls that include the installation of fresh parts and a deep cleansing. Aaron also constructs bikes from custom components and works with clients to accommodate all budgets by utilizing prviously used parts and allowing patrons to whittle down debts by volunteering at the shop. Aaron can pick up and drop off two-wheelers himself or welcome them into his store with more delight than a BMX rider moving to a neighborhood filled with drained pools.
