This was our first time here. The staff was great- everyone was so friendly and helpful! There was a play area for little kids. The trails we were on were nice and well maintained. I was a little surprised to see some bridges did not have guard rails- so if you have little kids, be sure to keep them close.

From Our Editors

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

Margaret Mead may be famous for this quote, but the women of the Whitefish Bay Garden Club brought it to life. Back in the spring of 1965, a group of 25 garden-club members came up with the idea for a local environmental education facility. They hit the ground running, and Riveredge Nature Center was established in 1968.

A lot has changed in the years since, but the nature sanctuary's mission remains the same: educate today and preserve tomorrow. Read on to learn more about how Riveredge stacks up by the numbers.

  • Although it began as a 72-acre plot of land, Riveredge Nature Center now spans 379 acres. The sprawling sanctuary is home to the 47-acre state natural area with a creek and pond, plus 10 miles of hiking rails. Its diverse landscapes include 28 acres of planted prairie, 7 deciduous forest types, and 1 fen.
  • With so many ecosystems, it's not surprising that the nature sanctuary not only features 23 types of soils and 580+ plant species, but a wide range of wildlife—including 186 bird species, 26 mammal species, and 7 species of anurans (think frogs and toads). Thanks to this hybrid, Riveredge has hosted more than 40 research endeavors to date.
  • It's not just scientists who are learning at Riveredge, though, thanks to a range of educational offerings. Visitors can stop by the education and visitor center for a look at the 4.2-kilowatt solar-energy system. More formal learning options include adults' Science for Everyone seminars, 90-minute summer adventures for kids, and 2 tree-climbing clubs.
