The Groupon description exaggerated (to the point of almost being a lie) the depth of information covered and the experience level of the instructor.

the groupon should make clear that this was not a wine tasting, just a class to learn about wine

I feel that the wine novice class was false advertising. The advertisement suggested the class would include tasting wine. There was a picture showing someone drinking wine. All the class was is a an hour and a half lecture, which I believe was not an $80.00 value as suggested. I feel like I got ripped off and tricked.

I was extremely disappointed with my recent Groupon experience. I paid $58 for 2 coupons to treat myself and my boyfriend (a birthday surprise) to the Wine Class at the American Bartending School in Little Falls, NJ on October 8 and did not feel it was worth the price at all. Although the fellow running the class was a pleasant guy, the class was a total disappointment. He had a printout that he read aloud to us. (I could have easily downloaded the same information from the internet and read it for 2 hours.) Unfortunately, because we were in a school that does not have a liquor license, he was only able to "talk and read to us" about the characteristics of different wines and "describe" what "leggs" were in a glass of wine and "describe" the aromas you would find in various wines. He passed around 3 wine glasses with fruits and spices for us to sniff and offered 2 little sips of absolutely undrinkable nonalcoholic wine! That was about it for the class! We were all informed that if we wanted to taste wines, we could drive over to Gary's Wine Store in Wayne as they offer free wine tasting on a Saturday. (Again, I did not need to spend $58 on a deal to be able to go for a little wine tasting that is free and open to the public at a local wine store.) The atmosphere of the school was also not so great. The school is down in the basement of an office building and it is kind of shabby. ( I realize that part of the reason that the bar/classroom itself looked so crummy was because the building had suffered flood damage from Hurricane Irene back in August, but perhaps they should replace the carpet and spruce the place up before they run classes.) They also should make it very clear in their information that there is no actual wine or real tasting in the "wine class." I would not recommend this class or this school to anyone. I was not impressed at all. This really was a complete waste of time and money (not to mention an embarrassingly crappy birthday gift.)

The building it is located inside is musty and filthy. The bartending room is in the basement with poor circulation and the room itself is run down and dingy. I would NOT recommend anyone breathing in the oxygen in that room, let alone consume anything that's stored there.

From Our Editors

For decades, American Bartenders School has helped aspiring spirit spreaders to develop steady hands, sure eyes for measurement, and an encyclopedic drink-formula knowledge. All of the school's classes cover basic mixing, garnishing, layering, and glassware selection in a realistic bar setting, complete with animatronic bar regulars debating whether Woody Allen is currently the president of Azerbaijan. Students gain access to a book of recipes for shooters, including cosmos, lemon drops, and jelly beans; learn how to make frozen specialties and hot toddies; and discover how to cure hangovers and hiccups. For the 12-hour bartending-certification course, graduation sessions are held where the instructors offer helpful tips on how to get hired as a bartender, before returning home with a mixology certificate, professional resumé, and the ability to set up and stock their own home bars, all of which make a classy addition to living rooms, lounges, and butler traps.
