Take your time... read as much as you can and watch the videos. If you have a time limit.. the videos are great... but, as I was told it would take 4 hours to watch them all. Pick and choose. If you live in the Chicagoland area.. go back more than once... you'll be glad you did.

Be sure you are able to walk long distances. It is more than worthwhile, but you need stamina.

This place is more than a museum about the Holocaust. It is an inspiring educational, global center with amazing programs that you won't find anywhere else. I've seen extraordinary movies, art and music performances and have heard great discussions and lectures. Highly recommended.

Allow several hours, for viewing exhibits. Take a tour with a docent, for added information/perspective. Inquire in advance, if any Holocaust survivors might be on site, for enrichment opportunities.

Very powerful. Especially the boxcar. Note: This museum isn't really designed for young children.

It's a fantastic museum that documents an important period of history. If we don't visit museums of this sort we are doomed to repeat the ugliest of human history. Additionally, the museum hosts awesome special exhibits, films, and speakers. Everyone should visit!!

Give yourself at least three hours, especially if they have a special exhibit. We got there two hours before closing and my wife never made it out of the "Race" exhibit.

From Our Editors

It was the late 1970s, decades after the Holocaust, but neo-Nazis hadn’t disappeared: they threatened to march in Skokie. Realizing the need to combat this kind of intolerance with education, Chicago-area survivors and their supporters banded together to create the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois. This initiative evolved into the museum which was built to honor the memory of Holocaust victims, educate visitors, and explore the human intolerance that continues to lead to genocide today.
