We spent 2 hours there and had to rush. Plan on being there at least 4 hours. Very sobering experience.

Choose carefully if you want a guided tour. Ours was supposed to be 1 1/2 hours and ended up being twice that. As a result, we missed many excellent looking smaller exhibitions — the temporary ones for 1936 Olympics, Iraq, and Cambodia, among others. Also, the guide's stories (which are very good) keep you from looking carefully at the displays, reading the documentation, and watching the videos, all of which are superb.

Only visited the 1936 Olympics exhibit this time. Very good. A little chair or stool would have helped with my bad knee.

We enjoyed our visit. It is difficult for us to rate and offer an opinion because we feel the impact of seeing and reading this history was slightly reduced because of our visit to the Halocaust Museum in Washington D.C. That being said, there is plenty of history to absorb and the museum is worth the trip. May want to consider calling ahead to see how many school groups are going to be in attendance. It's a little difficult to navigate the school kids and their tour guide!

From Our Editors

It was the late 1970s, and neo-Nazis were threatening to march in Skokie. Chicago-area Survivors and their supporters, reacting to the situation, came together to create the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois. This initiative evolved into the Museum which was built to honor the memory of Holocaust victims; educate visitors; and combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference in local communities and throughout the world.
