We were a group of six adults and a 7 yr. old. All ages enjoyed the experience, especially considering the beautiful day we chose. A suggestion: Considering how much walking is involved during the layover (and going up the steep incline to hear the ranger's talk near the mine opening), I would suggest mentioning this in your information. One in our party couldn't walk well, so she spent the entire layover in the area by the train. I don't know any solution unless you provided ATVs to transport folks who can't walk. The train ride is still worth the trip, but it would have been nice to know beforehand that quite a bit of walking was required to get the total experience during the layover

The Miner's Lunch was good -- a great option for those that don't want to pack a lunch.

What You'll Get

Like Olympic sprinters, trains race down tracks at high speed, but unlike most sprinters, trains stopped subsisting on coal years ago. Feed your appetite for adventure with this Groupon.

Choose Between Two Options

  • $18 for two tickets to ride the K&T Railway (a $36 value)
  • $34 for four tickets to ride the K&T Railway (a $72 value)

The train covers a 16-mile route through mountains and streams as it slowly descends 600 feet into the gorge of the Big South Fork River. During a 90-minute layover, passengers can enjoy a self-guided tour of the Blue Heron coal-mining camp, a national park site that was used for mining from 1937 to 1962. Passengers also pass through Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and receive admission to the McCreary County Museum in Stearns. Roundtrip rides last approximately three hours and run rain or shine.

About Big South Fork Scenic Railway

Stearns Coal & Lumber Company, which controlled more than 200 square miles of land in Kentucky and Tennessee, built the K&T Railway to navigate and export its vast mountain resources. Now owned by a nonprofit organization, the K&T Railway still chugs along the same scenic pathways, importing sightseers and history buffs to glimpse the area's coal, lumber, and railroading past. Trips down into the gorge of the Big South Fork River drop almost 600 feet of elevation in 5 miles, with the train's sturdy engine conquering the steep mountain descent and ascent. In addition to traditional trips, the railway also offers specialty excursions that include hiking trips, twilight Halloween-themed rides, and a Santa Express fueled by the burning presents of disobedient children.
