What You'll Get
Although Italians originally invented pasta as a fastener to keep Sicily from floating away, they abandoned it for less-delicious moorings after locals on both sides kept snacking their way toward separation. Tether your taste buds to today's Groupon: for $5, you get $10 worth of Italian deli fare at Capers Catering & Delicatessen in Westbury. This Groupon is not valid for catering.
Capers has dry-cured a name for itself as a steady purveyor of specialty Italian meats, cheeses, and imported European delicacies, in addition to filling neighborhood bellies with classic deli fare. In the wee hours of each morning, Capers hoists itself out of bed to nourish its patrons with morning fare that ranges from basic to downright savory, including signature breakfast sandwiches ($3.99–$4.99) and three-egg omelettes ($4.99).
Midday munchers and early evening eaters can nosh on a number of sandwiches, paninis, wraps, pitas, and salads, all of which—like Capers' fresh pastas and meat dishes—are concocted in-house and made-to-order. Sample signature sandwiches such as the Godmother (breaded eggplant, fresh mozzarella, tomato, and balsamic vinegar, $6.99) or the original roast beef (roast beef, melted mozzarella on toasted garlic bread with horseradish sauce, $6.99), or enjoy breaded fare in its two-dimensional form with pressed paninis, such as the Sorrentino—a hearty amalgamation of grilled chicken, prosciutto, and fresh mozzarella ($6.99). Leaf-and-lotus eaters can choose from a series of scrumptious salads, or fashion their own (starting at $4.49 for a small and $5.99 for a large) from their choice of greens, up to five toppings (including gorgonzola, black olives, sundried tomatoes, and artichoke hearts), and dressings (add meat or other select toppings for $1.50).
