- Outdoor boot-camp classes
- Set to lively pop music
- Supportive instructors
- Variety of exercises
Unlike summer camps, boot camps won't require you to put on a fundraising talent show to stop a nefarious computer company from turning Lake Cowabunga into its new industrial-waste depository. Team up to fight unfitness with today's Groupon: for $39, you get a month of unlimited boot-camp classes at Fitlab of San Diego, located at Sunset Point (a $199 value).
Led by certified instructor and personal trainer Matthew Lombardi, Fitlab's boot-camp sessions meld music and structured activity to ambush inactive muscles. The 60-minute sessions employ traditional and team-oriented techniques such as the Circle of Death, a group squatting exercise designed to help shape up bodies of all geometric persuasions.
All classes combine cardio, strength, and flexibility elements, and the calorie-killing schedule spans classes focused on full-body workouts, cardio improvement, and lower- and upper-body toning (classes are at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.). All events take place outside by the bay and, like televised small-claims court hearings, come enlivened with pop music and friendly encouragement. Classes typically include around 20 students, but attendance varies; call ahead to reserve your spot.

- I have cancelled my gym memberships knowing what you should be getting from a maximum calorie burn workout, and could NEVER go back. Fit Lab is dynamic, fun, informative and challenging! – Merlyn Y., 2/19/11
