Ballet Nebraska’s talented production team brings new life to classical dance performances with an infusion of fresh choreography, vivid narration, and dramatic musical scores. Artistic Director Erika Overturff’s interpretation of the holiday classic The Nutcracker strongly emphasizes clear storytelling coupled with eye-catching pirouettes, guiding audience members through a narrative fueled by the imagination of young heroine, Clara, and the music of Tchaikovsky. Familiar characters such as the sly Rat Queen and the Sugar Plum Fairy twirl through the show as Overturff adds her own twists and turns to the ever-evolving story. Ballet Nebraska’s 14 professional dancers take the stage with 130 youth and community performers––who dress as toy soldiers, shepherds, and other characters––and a 16-member chorus that lends its delicate vocal chords to cheerful holiday tunes.
As the only professional dance company of its kind in the region, Ballet Nebraska takes its mission to entertain and educate seriously. The company performs seasons of classic works and new favorites, pirouetting through The Nutcracker and mixed-repertory programs at area theaters and on tour. But the ballet's greatest contribution to the community might be its education and outreach programs. The artists frequently perform at charity benefits, stage productions for students, and hold workshops on storytelling through movement at local libraries, where silent storytelling is a must.
