What You'll Get

When a favorite pair of jeans gets a few too many rips or loses a button, it typically gets demoted to the back of the closet, or even worse, to the bottom of a trash bag. During the 90-minute workshop, DIY clothing artist and Think Outside the Store owner Sarah Gingold shows you how to rescue damaged clothing from an early demise using basic hand-sewing techniques. She guides you through sewing fundamentals such as replacing missing buttons and making basic hand stitches before demonstrating how to use a sewing machine to repair minor tears or sew together an entirely new garment.

  • Learn How to Restore Old Clothes and Make New Ones
With guidance from Sarah, practice sewing techniques that will help you restore an old pair of jeans or create a new wardrobe

Each event is capped at 5 participants; each event requires a minimum of 3 participants in order to take place.

Sarah Gingold Making clothes for a living might seem like an unusual career diversion for a Government and Politics major, but the transition made perfect sense to Sarah Gingold. She started sewing in high school, but became serious about the craft when she read The Travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy while attending the University of Maryland. The book showed Gingold how clothing affects world culture and politics, and through additional advocacy research, she learned the economic and environmental downsides of mass-producing clothes. She also realized that store-bought items never seemed to fit as well as something she had made herself.

In 2009, she made a New Year's resolution: she would make all of her own clothes and commit to using eco-friendly methods. So she purchased a foot-pedaled sewing machine, searched thrift shops for materials and supplies, and mastered the art of repurposing old garments. That New Year's resolution ultimately led to a career in 2011, when she opened Think Outside the Store in downtown Silver Spring.

Think Outside the Store wants to change the way you think about fashion. Instead of pre-designed garments, the shop and its staff encourages visitors to make their own clothing, jewelry, and accessories—thus creating a wardrobe that's personal and unique. Owner Sarah Gingold and her team lead sewing classes and workshops that teach the art of DIY clothing, as well as its many economic and environmental benefits. The wearable art studio supplies its customers with all the hand tools, sewing machines, and eco-friendly materials needed to bring designs into reality. The shop even features basic photography lighting and colored backdrops, just in case people want to model their newly created wardrobes.
