At age four, Raul Claros was already running a restaurant in his imagination. Wearing a pint-sized apron and chef's hat, he made his favorite Latin dishes out of Play-Doh. Today, he's still doing the same thing, only with real dough, and at a real restaurant: La Caraquena.
At this Latin American eatery, recently featured on the Food Network, Washingtonian Magazine, and Northern Virginia Magazine, Raul draws on family recipes to craft dishes that evoke his childhood in Venezuela. That means arepas filled with everything from beef and cheese to chicken salad and avocado, and platters of pulled beef, rice, and beans, crowned with sweet plantains. Guests dig into these authentic dishes in a well-light hardwood-floored dining room whose brown booths conjure images of South American forests.
