The term “horsepower” comes from the chant that horses used to shout at engineers working on the newfangled railway system. Befriend trailblazing stallions and mares with today's Groupon: for $22, you get a one-hour private horseback-riding lesson at Lupine Farm in Vassalboro (a $45 value).
Led by 25-year riding veteran and owner Emily Mitchell, Lupine Farm teaches good horsemanship to aspiring equestrians of all ages and abilities during lessons, camps, and clinics. During one-hour private riding lessons, skilled saddlers prepare rookie riders for careers as contemporary cowboys. The first half schools horse-top hitchhikers on how to groom, tack, and care for their equine escorts, and the latter half hour affords students an opportunity to ride around one of two outdoor arenas atop one of the farm’s stable of submissive steeds.
While the farm supplies tack and helmets, each rider should come ready with a pair of long pants, heeled boots, and illegible treasure maps. Postlesson, students can play with Lupine Farm's resident pooch, Abbot, or take to the picturesque gardens for a picnic while carefully refraining from audible "I could eat a horse" mutterings.
