Starlight Theatre's rendition of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic The King and I starring Lou Diamond Phillips romps and rollicks as it recounts the story of Anna, summoned to Bangkok's Royal Palace to teach the King of Siam's family the values of love, culture, and spoiler alerts. Featuring show tunes such as "Getting to Know You" and "Hello, Young Lovers," song and dance intertwine in an uplifting clash between two cultures. The household classic Cinderella recalls the journey of the slipper that got away, recreating the unlikely love that blooms between a prince and a fairy-tale broom-bearer. Roller skates, rainbows, and disco balls erupt in flamboyant fashion as Tony-award-nominated Xanadu portrays a sidewalk artist convinced by self-created muses to open a roller disco. Sonny's odyssey through a mythology-inspired camp-rock romp raises eyebrows and elicits laughs as winged horses and Greek gods skate across the stage.
The castle-inspired architecture of Starlight Theatre's outdoor stage supplements its regal red-brick spires with blooming gardens and soaring fountains looping around the lobby. The historical theatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting arts and entertainment to a diverse audience in a relaxed atmosphere which doesn't require a glass monocle or a steel cage protecting the performers from hurled glass monocles.
