To get in shape while avoiding the labor of physical exercise, most people hire pythons to squeeze their flesh into sexy forms. Change your figure without risk of asphyxiation with today’s Groupon: for $40, you get either two weeks of boot-camp classes (a $160 value) or four classes in one month (an $80 value) at START Fitness on Bush Street.
Launched by six-time Soldier of the Year and master fitness trainer Ken Weichert, START Fitness offers boot-camp classes inspired by military training techniques to slam participants into the wall of physical fitness and keep them plastered there like butterflies in a truck's grill. Customers can sign up for a two-week program ($160) or opt to attend four classes in a one-month period ($20 per class). Classes meet from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday, and workout itineraries vary somewhat from day to day. As upbeat tunes pump through the large exercise room, Ken squeezes groups of recruits through various cadence calls, calisthenics, kickboxing drills, and more, The routines combine cardio and strength training to help participants burn up to 800 calories an hour, leaving only a pile of caloric ashes on the floor. Other classes feature outdoor distance runs, interval sprints, and flag raisings after taking over children’s tree forts.
Unlike bench-pressing a couch with bikini models on it, START Fitness is an inspiring way to grind off unnecessary body parts while making new friends and running down chipmunks. New trainees only start on Mondays and Wednesdays; call ahead to reserve your classes and venture forth on your quest toward shape-shifting.
Boot-camp attendees should wear clothes they can move in, and bring a towel and water to every session.
START Fitness' Sergeant Ken has been featured extensively in the local and national press including features in the Colorado Journal-Advocate, the United States Department of Defense, San Francisco Business Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among others. Ken and his wife, Stephanie, who helps run START Fitness, were named the highest-powered kick-ass couple in San Francisco by 7x7 magazine. Yelpers give Sergeant Ken's Boot Camp at START Fitness an average of five stars.
- I've run through wooded trails in the Presidio and pretty much scrambled up every steep mountain in downtown. And that says nothing of the exhausting workouts we do indoors! – Shirin H., Yelp
- At the end of every single workout I felt a little bit better about myself. I started losing weight and started seeing my body transform. The workouts were indeed challenging. – Philip F., Yelp
Most people attend boot camps to lose weight, not to get strong enough to fight the Taliban. But that's just how START Fitness founder Sgt. Ken Weichert got his start. The veteran of Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom and six-time Soldier of the Year is also a certified Army Master Fitness Trainer who pushes combat troops to reach the military's fitness standards in basic training—that is, actual boot camp.
In START Fitness's weekday morning boot camps, seasoned instructors personally trained by Sgt. Weichert help everyday athletes lose weight, build muscle, and forge healthier lifestyles. They lead the camps which alternate between indoor and outdoor activity, calling on more than 100 lessons that constantly change up the workout to keep bodies guessing. The classes are designed for students who are already somewhat active, as they are intended to sculpt and tone as students go through obstacle courses, do push-ups, complete partner-assisted exercises, and run up to five miles without tiring or requiring a treat and an ear scratch after each task.
