The Gospel of Lovingkindness, set on the South Side of Chicago in a time of rising gun violence, tells the story of Manny, a 17-year-old who sings for President Obama at the White House and is murdered for his Air Jordan sneakers a few weeks later. Manny's mother Mary retraces the trajectory of her son's fateful encounter, conjuring the ghost of Civil Rights activist Ida B. Wells, who offers a challenging perspective for the family and our community. Marcus Gardley's gripping, poetic and timely drama is staged by Ubuntu Theater Project at the beautiful and historic Oakland City Church in the Diamond District.
