Beware Of Chincoteague Island, Virginia Hello I recently went on a trip for 3 days with my wonderful girlfriend of 5 years to Chincoteague Virginia. To give some background information we are both in our early 20's and a interracial couple me being black and her being white. Me and her are used to getting dirty looks from older couples and whispers but thats about it when we travel and go out somewhere but that never bothered us or anything because we know that what it comes with being in a interracial relationship. Although when traveling to Chinoteague Virginia it felt like we traveled back in time to the 1950-1960s. Me and girlfriend decided to stay at Atlantic shores inn and the staff was friendly and helpful so we are very grateful to them. Although the other hotels guest weren't as friendly and just give us dirty looks and acted like we didn't belong which was upsetting but didn't let it get to us as much. Day 1: After we got settled in we got food at ChincoTiki Bar and Grill. I looked at the menu before arriving there and I saw the Shrimp po boys was for $10 on there website and yelp reviews. When we got there I ordered two Shrimp po boys and expecting the price to be around $21 to $22 dollars but it came back as $30 dollars which was a big surprised since on their website it says its for $10 each. I asked the worker about and it said the prices have recently changed so I just let it be and decided to pay for it. In the back of the restaurant there is a mini beach and a live band by a water front area. We decided to sit at one the tables and to watch the band as we wait for our food. We forgot order a drink so my girlfriend decided to get some drinks from the car and we parked kinda far so it took her about 5- 7 minutes to come back. I was alone at the table and alot the people around me were staring at me and getting close to me and and looking me up and down and trying make me feel uncomfortable as possible and one the people at the place was yelling out different things to me I couldn't really hear over the music but he didn't look happy I was there. Then finally my girlfriend came back with the drinks and we got our food and I told her that we should eat our food fast and leave asap. I explained to her what happen when I was gone and she was in shock and couldn't even finish her food because of it and it was unfortunate that our experience was ruined for dinner because I really wanted to have a fun time. After we went to the local shops and the beach and we got mostly the same treatment with people being rude to us and being nasty. Also whispering racist things around us truly trying to make us feel that we don't belong here at all. Day 2: Me and my girlfriend got breakfast in the morning at this place the breakfast round up and shout out to this place making our breakfast great and giving great customer service and treating us with respect when we dined here and didn't look at us any different as any other person normally would. After breakfast we decide to look more information about the island and we found out chinoteague used to be a sundown town -( sundown town means it is not safe for people of color after sun down) Which we thought made alot sense but still going to make the most of this vacation. Later on in the night we decide to go to this restaurant called the Ropewalk and we saw the restaurant was packed and they don't take reservation or we would of got one before hand. We decided to walk in anyway to see we could get a table and we were behind one other couple asking for table and the lady at the front desk said a table was going to be 30 minutes to an hour wait and me and girlfriend were happy since that not to long to wait for a table on a pack night like this. When it was our turn to ask for a table the lady at the front desk looked me up and down and said it was going to be an 2 hour to 3 hour wait even though the people in front of us only had 30 minute to 1 hour wait time and when we asked why she just said things has changed. After we decided to leave and not make a big scence to avoid any conflict and decided to make a revsation at this other place called The Pearl. The restaurant had friendly staff for the most part but the food they brought to us was very old and some the meat was spoiled. We had hushpuppies as an appetizer and they were pretty burnt but kinda decent. After I order the chicken cheese state with fries and my girlfriend got the crab cakes. My chicken cheese steak smelled like very odd and I ate abit of it and tasted rancid and I told the server it and they brought it back to the kitchen and took off my bill and my girlfriend said he crab cake was ok until after we left the resturant and we had to pull over 5 min later so she can throw up that crab cake she ate. Day 3: We decided to check out really early our last day and was pretty disappointed in the area but we made the most of it despite the people around us and their backwards thinking. To any person of color that is thinking to come to this place DON'T this place is not friendly to anyone other than white which is very sad to say but I hope I helped someone that is thinking about traveling here.

Good Stay We stayed in July of 2023. I was traveling with my daughter and 4 grandkids. We rented 2 rooms for 1 night. We found the motel to be modestly price. There was a nice swimming pool and the free breakfast was better than expected. The rooms are a little older, as are most in this area, but they were clean and functional. The staff was accommodating and friendly.

Clean, comfy and safe. We booked a four-night stay (Th-Mo) for a two double-bed room. The room was large and clean. The beds were comfortable with soft sheets. The tub/shower was great with good water pressure and quick hot water. The room had a good small fridge and microwave. Parking was never an issue even with lots of weekend guests. Free breakfast was adequate - wasn't expecting to have as many options as they do offer. Staff were friendly and tried to be helpful. Our negatives were that we were first put in a room (we fully moved in) only to discover after dinner (late) that the TV didn't work. We asked for a TV replacement so we didn't have to move to another room, but they didn't do that and instead we had to move. The fridge had to be unpacked and then repacked in new room. Staff did offer to help us move our items, but we preferred to do that ourselves. New room still had TV issues, which my husband figured out how to fix (connected improperly). New room also had a bathroom door that wouldn't fully close and main door deadbolt didn't work. There was a safety chain. Temperature control was decent. In general, we were comfortable here, but it is very aged with wavy floors and visible "fixes" to walls, shower curtain rod, etc. Clean, comfy and safe are my most important items, and this fit the bill. We love Chincoteague and try to visit as affordably as possible and Atlantic Shores met our needs.

Not bad for an economy hotel on a tourist island Not bad for an economy hotel on a tourist island. The bed was comfortable, but the sheets looked like they had been balled up—very wrinkled. Shower had plenty of hot water. Location is very good, convenient to restaurants. Parking was good.
