Beautiful, special place This is one of the more beautiful hotels I’ve stayed at in Europe. The design of the lobby and of the rooms is truly magnificent. Every detail has been thought out. There is a mezzanine level reading room, which is gorgeous and peaceful and I highly recommend it. Overall, the service is pretty good, though there are a few team members who clearly have not been trained very well. That said it’s a beautiful space with ample sized rooms in a beautiful part of Lisbon. Would definitely stay here again.

Best of the imperfect bunch This is my third stay at this hotel, which might sound like a glowing endorsement, but don't be fooled. Every time I visit Lisbon, I scour for alternatives, but if you're after 5-star accommodations in the heart of the old city, options are scarce. So, here I am, back at the "best of the bunch." Let's start with the positives: The rooms are beautifully decorated, giving off an air of thoughtful design and style. The location is unbeatable, right in the middle of the old Lisbon buzz. Stray too far from the historic center, though, and you'll find yourself in a drab, characterless time capsule from the 70s. The restaurant and rooftop are charming, drawing non-guests like moths to a flame, but as a hotel guest, you’ll always get a seat. Now, onto the areas that need improvement—and there are plenty. First, the reception staff either have a perpetual case of the Mondays or just can't be bothered to muster a smile. They do the bare minimum (at their own leisurely pace), but their attitude leaves much to be desired. This lack of enthusiasm has been a consistent theme over my three stays. Then there's the key system—truly a relic from early manual to tech transition. The key itself is massive, attached to an even more cumbersome leather pouch. You have to insert it into the door and "listen" for some mythical sound cue to know when to turn it. You'll miss that cue 2 out of 3 times and find yourself cursing this antiquated system by end of day one. The coffee situation is a mixed bag. They offer freshly ground beans instead of capsules, which is nice, but the quality leaves much to be desired. The chosen bean varietal and roast are too acidic and charred for my taste—an affront to us coffee snobs. In summary, this isn't a hotel you'd choose to return to, but you do because Lisbon hasn't provided better options. When those options finally arrive, this place will be history.
