Family Vacation We have stayed here multiple times. We definitely prefer palace but chose tropical this time. If we go back, definitely sticking with Palace. The rooms are far more comfortable and up to date. Overall great for families and we still had a great time. Beach is great too and the pools.

Overall Good Value - Pros & Cons My 19 year old son and I stayed at the Barcelo Tropical the week before Christmas. We got a good deal, so the cons of the resort weren't a deal breaker, but some things were getting old by the end of the week. Pros: 1. Excellent snorkeling right off the beach. There is a lot of rocky reef where we saw beautiful coral and fish; and also a sandy side where we found the sea turtles. Bring your own snorkel gear/water shoes, as the resort has an outstanding location for snorkeling. 2. The pool, grounds and beach are kept in immaculate condition. No seaweed at all on the beach, but that may be seasonal? 3. Lots of great amenities including a games area, mini golf and a on-site plaza for shopping. A great resort for families! 4. The a la carte restaurants were good and staff was excellent. We made our reservations for the week at check-in and there was limited availability. Thankfully we prefer to eat on the earlier side. 5. I thought we may have to do a lot of walking based on some reviews. However, I found everything to be easily accessible. The Tropical and Colonial share amenities, so it really doesn't matter which one you choose between these two. Cons: 1. Our moderate room was in need of updating. While the room was clean, it had an unbelievable amount of moisture. I've been to Mexico many times and am used to the humidity, but everything in the room was damp despite running air and the ceiling fan. Our bedding, pillows, clean clothes in our suitcases, money & Paper curling up, etc. I set a card on the bed to have our sheets changed and it was wet with water absorption within minutes. They must have a major issue here... By the end of the week it felt gross and we were so tired of getting in a damp bed. 2. Buffet food was below average. I don't have high expectations for the buffets at all inclusive resorts, but this one was below average. 3. Confirming what others have stated about lounge chairs, but I expected as much. I was on the beach around 8am and chairs were gone. They did allow guests to take chairs from the pool area (pool filled up a bit later) down to the beach, so that's what I did each day and it worked out fine. The beach was beautiful. No beverage service on the beach, but that didn't bother us. Also, no vendors on the beach, so they must prohibit this (doesn't bother me, but I know some people don't like the interruption). All in all, it was a good value for what I paid. I wouldn't go back personally, as my young adult would prefer an adults only and I prefer a bit higher end, but I would definitely recommend it for families with younger children.

Great Vacation Spot This was our 2nd trip to this resort (Tropical). We were impressed the first time with the cleanliness of the resort as well as the food options. Our daughter has Celiac disease, so she cannot eat gluten. The restaurants, including the buffets are extremely accommodating. She had a letter in Spanish from Guest Services explaining the Gluten allergy and she was prepared a special meal in the buffets and in the ala carte restaurants, the waiters went over the menu with her to tell what she could and could not eat. This was the biggest reason we chose to come back to Barcelo Maya Tropical. I honestly could not tell you a reason to not book this resort. It is huge. There are 6 properties on the grounds. Depending on which one you book at you will have access to all 6 or 5 or 4 of them. There is a ton to do at the resort since you can access several others. Pools are enormous, chairs are plentiful, although during peak times you do need to be up early to "reserve" chairs. I've been travelling to all inclusive resort over the last 15 years and this is the first resort I have ever visited twice. That alone is the highest praise I could give a resort as this was the only one I really wanted to come back to.

Our Annual Family Trip to Barcelo Maya Resort This year's visit was our 13th time to Barcelo Maya Tropical Resort. Every year that we come back, the experience keeps getting better and better. The food, service, staff, and resort are first class. The welcomed upgrade this year... the wifi now extends to the beach!

Have a seat - kidding, no chairs. We travelled with our children, ages 14 and 11, and inlaws. We arrived boxing Day. We were at tropical. Things we liked: - staff are lovely and work very hard - the food was great! Go to the French restaurant, if you're able. And get your lunch at one of the beachside restaurants. - service was usually speedy at bars (we mostly got Pepsi, which is fast to receive, but we never waited more than a few minutes to be served) - kids loved the surfing experience (make reservations the day before) - we did the three hour snorkel wth Dressel diving - and loved it! -grounds are very clean! Things that could be improved: - the rooms are dated - the beach chair situation is unbelievable. By 730 am most chairs were reserved for the day (and would often sit unused for the majority of the day). We also noticed chairs reserved in the evening for the next day. I'd like to suggest that the resort invest in more chairs or enforce no reserving. - smoking/vaping: would be great to not be near such activities. Overall, I think I'd recommend but I'd warn folks to be prepared for the chair situation.
