  • Trapeze Arts
Trapeze School New York’s expansion west meant Angelenos no longer had to cross the country to join the circus. At their outdoor studio on the Santa Monica Pier, highly trained instructors teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced maneuvers during classes on the flying trapeze, aerial silks, lyra, trampoline, and Spanish web. All of Trapeze School New York’s countrywide facilities in New York, Boston, Washington, DC, Chicago, and LA hold themselves to high safety standards that account for everything from equipment to instructors and safety belts. In an effort to bring their flying-trapeze instruction to surrounding communities regardless of funding, the school also gives lessons through their nonprofit branch of operations.

  • Kinetic Arts Center
At Kinetic Arts Center, students run away to the circus because it's a more fun way to stay fit than running around a track. There they learn circus arts such as modern dance steps, adventurous trapeze routines, and physics-bending parkour moves. And not only do classes keep students, who range from toddlers to adults, in good shape, but they also prepare them for performing in front of a crowd. Pupils can also study juggling and clowning. They're taught by a roster of teachers whose long r?sum?s include backgrounds in dance, theater, and the circus arts.

  • Woodminster Amphitheater
The Woodminister Amphitheatre, located in Oakland’s Joaquin Miller Park, is a great place to catch a production of classic plays like Mary Poppins or The Producers. Each summer this 2,000-seat venue puts on three performances, featuring both amateur and professional actors. The scenery is enough of an attraction that there doesn’t even need to be a performance to make the Woodminister Amphitheatre worth visiting. Bring a packed lunch and a loved one and enjoy a cozy picnic in one of the Bay Area’s most beautiful parks. It’s great for stargazing too, just be sure to dress warmly and bring a blanket, as the nights can get a little chilly.

  • Cantare Con Vivo
Cantare Con Vivo started as a 24-voice choral ensemble, but more than 25 years later, it raises thousands of voices across the city of Oakland. Now, the organization, which seeks to bring together a diverse community through music, is divided into three distinct wings. One hundred auditioned singers compose a chorale that showcases four concert programs each season, including works with full orchestra. The 24-person chamber ensemble performs throughout the Bay Area, featuring both brand-new and historically renowned pieces from around the world. But those ensembles don't account for the largest number of voices. That distinction goes to Cantare Con Vivo's outreach arm, Cantare Children's Choirs of Oakland. The program sponsors in-school choral music education and after-school choirs for more than 2,300 underserved kids in 10 local elementary, middle, and high schools. The students, who otherwise might not have access to any arts education, get to learn about music and themselves while performing great works for their family and friends.
