Five Things to Know About Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art
When he wasn't navigating the world of business as the Chairman of the Board of Meade Electric, Joseph Lizzadro sought refuge in the solitary work of cutting and polishing gems and minerals. Today, Lizzadro's collection lives on as the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art. Open since 1962, the museum houses of delicate and intricate artworks and carvings made from rare finds including coral, agatite, gemstones, and jade (Joseph's favorite). Read on to learn more about the museum's effort to preserve art styles that can be hard to find elsewhere.
Don’t know much about lapidary art? No problem! The museum has you covered. Start on the recently renovated lower level with The Rock and Mineral Experience, a permanent exhibit that introduces you to the subject with a two-ton petrified log, tourmaline from Brazil, fluorite from Illinois, and copper from Michigan.
You can see the piece that started it all. Lizzadro's inspiration came in the form of a tiny jade vase; originally purchased as raw material for a new project, the piece so charmed Lizzadro with its delicate craftsmanship that he couldn't bear to repurpose it. Today, it's on permanent display, and also leant its shape to the museum's logo.
There’s plenty of time to stop in. The museum is open six days a week (not Monday), and Fridays are free.
Kids have plenty to do. Get them busy with the museum’s scavenger hunt, which sends small groups of kids throughout the museum to track down information on lapidary art. The museum routinely welcomes school and scout groups.
Championship rings count as lapidary art. In 2015, the museum ran an exhibit on local sports franchises’ championship rings, with examples representing the Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears, and White Sox. Sadly, championship rings were not made when the Cubs last won the World Series in 1908, so they couldn’t be included.
