Cynthia Ruiz spent her corporate career helping others, but after 30 years, she wanted to do more. In 2005, she began looking for the services of a life coach, which eventually led her to the California Institute of Healing Arts. Cynthia walked away from the institute with a degree as a holistic health practitioner, alternative health practitioner, certified clinical hypnotherapist, certified behavioral therapist, and certified life coach. These disciplines are combined into holistic hypnotherapy programs to help clients achieve their goals, from eliminating smoking habits to losing unwanted pounds. Cynthia uses specialized hypnotherapy to remove mental blocks that inhibit growth and replaces them with thoughts that bolster inner-strength, all while clients remain conscious of themselves and their surroundings.
While working as a law enforcement officer in the 1970s, Dennis Atkinson became fascinated with hypnosis, often watching hypnotists draw out forgotten details and suppressed memories from crime victims and witnesses. After retiring from the force, Dennis decided that he wanted to help people overcome their personal issues and began formal hypnosis training. During hypnosis sessions, Dennis accompanies his clients, who are lulled into a conscious state of relaxation, on journeys into their subconscious, offering suggestions to help them hurdle over stubborn mental blocks toward reducing anxiety, losing weight, quitting smoking, and solving intermediate sudoku puzzles. Dennis emphasizes that people can only undergo hypnosis if they choose to, and patrons are fully aware of their surroundings and the events that take place during each session.
Dennis Atkinson also combines hypnosis and visualization techniques with his life-coaching services to guide clients forward on the path to achieving their goals. He likens his role as a life coach to that of a traditional athletic leader, but he can safely travel outside of a tank of Gatorade to assist in career and health ambitions.
Healing Alternatives Meditation Center fosters a heightened awareness and deeper relationship with one's own body and mind. Founder Lisa Chapman-Sorci, a certified Komyo Reiki Kai teacher since 2001, employs skills honed in hospitals, wellness institutions, and animal hospitals to calm energy fields with the ancient Japanese practice of reiki. Certified practitioners host weekly introductions to Shoshin meditation held in their comfy meditation room adorned with soft red pillows and floor-to-ceiling windows. Through behavioral therapy and life coaching, certified therapist Alicia O'Hara gives patients the tools to manage day-to-day challenges and offers hypnotherapy as a way to connect with the subconscious mind. Patients also exercise bodies along with minds through yin yoga classes, which allow time to fully explore postures through a gentle soundtrack of one hand clapping.
Bob McCallister's teacher liked to compare a patient's symptom to the tip of a tree branch. Just as the branch can be traced back to its root, a symptom must be traced to its underlying cause—and only by treating the cause will symptoms disappear. Now a master of Oriental medicine, a certified medical qigong practitioner, and a licensed acupuncturist, Bob devotes himself to treating the root of patients’ ailments with classic Chinese medicine.
Before administering a single healing technique, acupuncturists examines each patient and draws up a personalized treatment plan. This could involve inserting hair-thin acupuncture needles at specific points of the body to adjust the flow of energy. Acupuncturists also prescribes custom herbal formulas to maintain the body’s energetic balance, and he performs medical qigong therapy to combat chronic pain and side effects from chemotherapy.
Three accomplished naturopathic doctors lead the team at Human Reconstruction, combining their knowledge of both conventional and alternative medicine to treat their patients. This multidisciplinary approach has enabled them to create a diverse palette of individualized medical services, including natural face-lifts that use the patient's blood to ease wrinkles and infertility treatments. Dr. Heather Wdowin-Weitman pairs her extensive education with her personal experience in sports medicine—she's circumnavigated the globe with only a backpack and a tiny animal guide, sailed the Nile, and hiked the Grand Canyon on nine occasions, and her current clients include active athletes in the NFL and UFC.
