Students should bring: Bottle of water Registration required: Yes Good for beginners: Yes Average class length: 30-60 minutes Number of Staff: 1–5 people Class location: Indoors only Established: 2009 Guests allowed: No Parking: Free street parking Pro Tip: Bring a positive attitude and interest in the spirit of martial arts. Q&A with the Admin With Instructor Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated? We keep our students motivated by providing a challenging curriculum in a supportive environment. Most students come to our school already with an interest in the culture of Chinese martial arts. It is exciting to learn about a rich tradition first hand from teachers who have trained most of their lives professionally in China. What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make? We focus on helping students make a healthy physical transformation. We've seen our students improve their balance, their reflexes, and their posture as well as gain more self-confidence and find new friendships at the school. What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student? A typical group class begins with warm ups, stretching, and practicing the basic movements and forms for the style (Kung Fu, Tai Chi, or Sanshou) of the class the student is attending. Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover? Chinese martial arts is not just about self-defense or how to make your body stronger, it's about promoting peace, keeping your body healthy, and caring about others. Kung Fu can help you discover yourself.

  • Carlson Lobby - North Park University
On a trip to Chicago from his native Italy, young Mario Tricoci changed his life forever. The fledgling hairdresser stopped in at a prestigious salon, where he impressed the owner with his impeccable display of skill and landed himself a job. The next six decades brought strings of industry awards and the opening of his very own salon, which soon exploded into 26 locations in four states. With his styling prowess proven both to the industry and to the clients he encountered each day, the coiffeur decided to share his gift with others. In 2004, he established Tricoci University to foster a new generation of cosmetologists and spa technicians trained to thrive in the luxury-spa industry. Throughout the Midwest, Tricoci protégés study a rigorous curriculum in high-end salon and spa surroundings to learn how to create beautiful hairdos, choose skin-flattering cosmetics, and beautify nails and skin. A team of experienced industry professionals readies pupils for the beauty world with in-depth classes, and outside education arrives via video demonstrations and guest-artist lectures on Vidal Sassoon's Wedge-Bob Postulate. More advanced students get a preview of their career to come by beautifying real people during instructor-supervised treatments, which lend the stylist essential experience as the client enjoys a pampering session at a discounted rate.

  • Alliance Francaise De Chicago
Four Things to Know About the Alliance Française de Chicago The Alliance Française de Chicago was founded in 1897 to foster an understanding of French language and culture among the people of Chicago. It’s a worthy effort, especially since the first European settlers of the land that would become Chicago were French. Read on to learn more about the Alliance: There’s a lot of wine. In addition to French language classes, the Alliance hosts lots of one-off cultural events where wine flows freely, including French film screenings and sommelier-led wine tastings. If you’re considering enrolling in a class, check out the free open house, where you can take trial classes and enjoy complimentary wine and cheese. You’ll become a master of pronunciation. Many of the teachers at the Alliance Française (ah-lee-AHNZ-frahn-SEZ) are native speakers of French, and the rest have been studying the language long enough that you might think they are. You’re never too old (or young) for class. Students in the Alliance’s French classes range in age from 1 to 85. The Chez Kids Academy immerses kids aged 1–12 in French at a time when their brains are primed for language acquisition. It’s part of a global tradition. The Alliance Française de Chicago is one of more than 1,100 Alliances Françaises in the world.

  • Fussy Baby Network
Linda Gilkerson, a professor at Erikson Institute, founded the Fussy Baby Network to support families who were having difficulty with the crying, sleeping, and feeding challenges that a new baby can present. The innovative home-visit program supports any parent feeling stressed and depressed during the first months of the infant's life. To that end, she gathered social workers, counselors, psychologists, child-development specialists, and pediatricians to work together to ensure families have the most up-to-date knowledge for caring for a new baby. Today, Fussy Baby Network, a program of the Erikson Institute, has helped more than 6,000 families in Cook County, responding to requests from parents having concerns with their infant’s excessive crying, sleeping, or feeding difficulties. A specialist will travel to parents’ homes and assist them in overcoming their specific challenges, including colic, feeding problems, and disrupted sleeping schedules. Specialists help to determine sleep schedules, reassure parents, and teach them how to communicate with their new children. Fussy Baby Network also provides mental-health and development screenings to detect if family members could benefit from additional therapy; it can then offer referrals to other professionals.

  • Sentieri Italiani
In Italian, sentieri Italiani means "Italian paths"—something with which Daniela Cavallero is very familiar. A native of Italy's Piemonte region, Cavallero imagined a place where she could bestow the rich heritage and language of her homeland upon the citizens of her new home in Chicago. She spun her vision into a reality, summoning a squadron of fluent Italian speakers to lead Sentieri Italian's language and culture classes. During each lesson, these well-versed instructors strive to teach pupils of all experience levels more than just language skills—they also give them a thorough rundown of Italian culture and history. The team also spreads its wealth of knowledge of all things Italian beyond the classroom. To prep travelers for annual excursions to Italy, staffers devise detailed cultural training to ensure travelers know basic phrases and can quickly catch leaning towers. They also arrange regular cultural and dining events and organize a trove of services, including translations, genealogical studies, and assistance in procuring Italian citizenship.

  • MyGuru
When they founded their business in 2009, MyGuru's founders were all still graduate students at Northwestern University. The trials and tribulations of preparing for the SAT, ACT, GMAT, and LSAT tests fresh in their minds, they saw a need, and an opportunity, for customized one-on-one tutoring for aspiring students. Having all cut their teeth working for prominent test-prep and tutoring companies themselves, the founders set out to create a company with a different focus from the rest. MyGuru got rolling slowly, focusing on acquiring the services of stellar tutors, rather than in catering to the maximum number of students. After three years steadily growing its influence in the Chicagoland area, MyGuru began expanding to other urban areas where tutors could thrive: big cities including New York, college towns such as Champagne, IL, and scholarly bastions like the secret NASA Moonbase Only for Smart People. Today, MyGuru's experienced staff can be found around the country, helping students master test materials whether they're on the road to an undergraduate degree or their Master of Mastery.
