  • Pikes Peak Tattoo
Uncle Bud and Aunt Brinda Yates founded Pikes Peak Tattoo in 1978. After years of honing her craft, Brinda took home the first-place trophy in the Best Use of Tribal category at the 2009 Colorado Tattoo Competition. Now, when she isn't inking, she actively participates in the National Tattoo Association—of which Uncle Bud once served as president—and sings doggy lullabies to her herd of six chihuahuas. To help with the shop, Brinda hired current manager, Barrett Leary, a skilled artist who got her start as the apprentice for Dan McClure of Bullwinkle's Tattoo and Body Piercing. Her artistry is wide reaching, as she also earned a bachelor of fine arts in ceramic sculpture from Kansas City Art Institute and was featured in the documentary Craft In America for developing a distinctive ceramic technique. Barrett skillfully draws custom designs and comfortably transitions between different styles, though she retains a fondness for large-scale pieces with bright colors. She and her fellow certified artists also offer permanent makeup, tattoo removal, and piercing. They perform all their services with hospital-grade sterilization techniques and keep their single-use-only equipment in special sterilization pouches, discarding each tool immediately after use.

  • Woundup Guitar Lessons
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? Woundup Guitar Lessons focuses on our students passion to learn the guitar. Our lessons are based on what the student is interested in, which accelerates learning and makes the process more fun. We also use our website, where our students can access easy to understand materials covered in class. Do you provide any materials? What should your students expect to bring? The student just needs a guitar. I will supply all printed materials. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? I have been playing guitar for 20 years and I was inspired to begin teaching the guitar professionally while teaching guitar to my daughter. I love being able to foster a persons love of music in teaching a musical instrument. Music has meant so much to me personally, and it is my greatest pleasure to be able to teach others.

  • Rocky Mountain Diving Center
The visibility beneath the waters of Aurora Reservoir is between 5 and 12 feet in front of your face. The murkiness is less frustrating than it is suspenseful—you don't know exactly when the twin engines of an airplane will appear, allowing you to trace the rest of the sunken craft and greet its finned inhabitants. The remote, shadowy world of the downed plane is just one of many rendered accessible to students of Rocky Mountain Diving Center, where instructors can train their protégés up from first-time divers to certified teachers through a combination of classroom, pool, and outdoor sessions. The center's educational programs include swimming and snorkeling classes in addition to open-water-diving-certification courses. These lessons enable graduated pupils to delve into several local lakes. The curriculum also covers specialty training on topics such as deep diving, night diving, and underwater photography—a career passion of the school's owner, Mark. With equipment for sale and rental as well as a dedicated service team, the center prepares its students for safe and comfortable excursions. Its tropical retreats afford rare opportunities to explore the reefs off of Fiji or swim alongside whale sharks or shark whales—extremely intimidating belugas.

  • Creative Arts for Kids' Enrichment Northglenn
Aimed at the broadening of juvenile horizons, the music classes and ensemble programs at Intermezzo Academy of Music, LLC are designed for students as young as 4 years old through adulthood. No matter their emphasis—classics to symphonic rock—ensemble classes give aspiring musicians a chance to build their skills with a peer group that they're comfortable with. Their children's classes emphasize play and discovery, rather than rigid repetition of scales, to instill kids with a love of music and get rid of the debilitating fear that the rhythm is going to get them. Teachers often host sessions for adults as well, providing grownups occasion to raise their skills during all-level grown-up orchestras.
