Classically trained and culturally diverse, Ballethnic Dance Company blends traditional ballet with the artistic influences of ethnic cultures. Its classes include ballet at all levels, hip hop, and jazz, along with more unique offerings such as African and ballethnicize, an original dance style developed by cofounder Waverly Lucas.
IndoCycle Studio is a spinning-only facility where members come for vigorous indoor group cycling workouts. Stationary Spinner NXT bikes are the focal point of each calorie-blasting workout—experienced instructors lead classes in high-energy cycling circuits, incorporating music, visual effects, and subliminal sounds of stampeding herds to help riders through intense sessions. Each workout is customizable to every individual’s fitness level, but the end result is the same for everyone; burn fat and build muscle during rides that simulate climbing hills and racing courses. The kickboxing classes at Explosive Sports MMA & Fitness are deceptively named—they cover much more than kickboxing. Beyond training on speed bags and heavy bags, students work with weight poles, dumbbells, and medicine balls in exercises that range from plyometrics and strength training to MMA moves. For more combative workouts, full-contact MMA classes blend muay thai, jujitsu, and kenpo with kickboxing and boxing, creating a self-defense system that’s more comprehensive than giving threatening people big hugs. In the eight years that Jay Broxton has worked in the fitness industry, he's trained people from all walks of life—from young kids to professional athletes and celebrities, including Kansas City starter Tank Tyler and newscaster Pam Oliver. Backed by a personal-training certification and a lifetime of athletic experience, Jay captains his own fitness program—Body That Works—where he joins fellow fitness instructors to lead clients though comprehensive boot-camp or personal-training workouts that combine cardio with strength-training and TRX-training techniques. Committed to battling youth obesity, Jay also conducts a variety of youth athletic training programs designed to prepare students for upcoming athletic seasons or full-contact chess tournaments.
At the women’s only Glitter’s Fitness Club, visitors tone their physiques while unleashing their inner vixens during a choice of 22 classes per week. Instructors guide students through yoga and Piloxing, a fusion of Pilates and boxing, and helm sultry Zumba dance parties and Sexy Chair classes, during which students learn to look seductive while building a wooden rocking chair.
