With its bare hands, Norris Recreation Center tears through the piecemeal membership and class fees that keep exercisers from traditional gyms, and flings open the doors to its modern facility. A gift from the St. Charles–native Norris family, the nonprofit establishment makes living healthier a viable option. Within its stone walls, five dedicated rooms bustle with the whir of cardio and weight-training equipment, and swimmers careen down the 12 lanes of the 50-meter pool during lessons, lap swims, and open pool time. The squeaks of pivoting sneakers peal off the racquetball court's walls, and twosomes, foursomes, and Billie Jean King's army of clones descend on the four tennis courts, which guests rent by the hour. Members can simmer in the center's saunas or whirlpool, or shuck off tension with a swedish, sport-injury, orthopedic, or deep-tissue massage before showering and retrieving their gym bags from complimentary lockers.
Trained instructors lead 13 free classes throughout the week, with diverse aerobic curricula that include cycling, Zumba, and Pilates. For individualized guidance, personal trainers coach clients out of workout plateaus. As parents work out, childcare professionals engage lads and lasses with interactive games, toys, and movies in the center's nursery, where kids build social skills and imagination while pretending to be heroic astronauts, firefighters, or accountants.

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
British Swim School has been dedicated to teaching water survival for over 30yrs. Our methods are based on teaching beginners of all age groups that the ability to float on their back is the most important water survival skill of all. Our teaching is a gradual, gentle and fun process.
Is your location strictly for adults, or can kids participate as well?
Anyone over 3 months old are able to participate in our swimming lessons.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Drowning is the leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age. It can be prevented by teaching children the ability to survive in water in case of emergency.
What do you love most about your job?
It is very satisfying when I teach children to float all by themselves. I know that it may save their life one day in case of emergency. Also, it is very fun to work with children.
Just like at the beach, when you wade into Seafari Springs' zero-depth pool, the water will just cover your toes. Keep going, and the water's surface stretches farther and father above those toes, up to 12 feet at its deepest. Surrounding this pool are water-driven attractions designed for different ages. Little ones cluster around the Aqua Bloom, a blossom that sprays erratic streams of water from its center, much like a camel with holes in its humps. At Turtle Falls, a 13-foot waterfall douses visitors, while a wide swathe of grass nearby invites guests to let the sun lend its warmth or keep cool with an iced coffee. Older kids zip down speed slides, tube slides, and a 130-foot long water slide. Meanwhile, the Oasis provides a variety of concessions to satisfy appetites.
Wading through indoor heated pools, the instructors at British Swim School teach independent swimming skills to learners aged 3 months and older, adhering to a curriculum devised by British national swimmer Rita Goldberg. The 30-minute one-on-one sessions and small-group lessons, containing eight or fewer swimmers, elucidate essential techniques for water safety and the importance of speaking fluent manatee. Swimboree (ages 3 months–3 years with parents) and Young Minnows sessions (ages 1–3 years without parents) teach wee swimmers basic water-survival skills, such as the back float. Turtle One and Turtle Two classes focus on freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke maneuvers, honing more structured swimming skills in older kiddos. British Swim School's Shark courses enhance stamina and speed and teach even more demanding strokes, such as the butterfly and little-known mountain-goat flail. Certain British Swim School classes require parents to participate in the water or to supervise from the pool deck, and adults-only lessons allow grown-ups to refine their own abilities without the supervision of a toddler.
