What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer? The appreciation a dad showed after me sending 2 hours getting the tangles out of his daughter's 16 inched long hair at Christmas. • Studio 1211
At Studio 1211, Barbara George taps into ancient Eastern and Egyptian techniques to soothe and beautify patrons. Inside a private treatment room, she aims to relieve pain and improve the nervous system with reflexology and shiatsu that applies focused pressure to mapped-out areas along the feet, scalp, and neck. The aromatherapy educator boasts 20 years of anti-aging product experience; during the spa's signature Egyptian facial, a milk-and-honey mask makes visages gleam back to life, wrinkles collapse into whispers, and cows and bees look on in bewilderment.

  • Roca Salon and Spa
Roca Salon & Spa’s roots draw upon more than 35 years of styling history, adventure, and love. It began with Vidal Sassoon–trained hairstylist Rod Cavner running a small Main Street salon named Blondie’s, where he was joined by his soon-to-be wife, and fellow Vidal Sassoon–trained hairstylist, Rhonda. After marrying and moving to Hawaii for four years, the duo returned with innovative new services, design concepts, and island-themed nicknames for friends. The result was Rhonda's three-year makeover of the space, which now includes eco-friendly, energy-efficient lighting and appliances as well as eye-catching decor. The couple's time spent island hopping is evident in the pedicure room, where bamboo reaches up toward a sparkling chandelier that shines upon backlit purple-and-pink glass basins, in which toes bask in hot stones and Hawaiian mud. Stacey Soble of Salon Today interviewed Rhonda when the salon was named the third runner-up in the magazine's Salon of the Year design competition. Cavner said, "The bonus wow factor is the entire styling area floor has embedded phosphorescent chips which cause the floor to glow in the dark when the lights suddenly go off!” But the decor isn't the only thing that earned the company recognition as one of KC Magazine’s best Kansas City salons in 2012. The talented team includes hair colorists who have trained in London, Paris, and Beverly Hills, as well as skilled aestheticians, massage therapists, and nail technicians. The color experts work their magic in an elegant, modern area with see-through chairs, potted white orchids, and long strings of crystal beads that divide the space and give visiting Spider-Men an easy way to reach the ceiling.

  • Starmaker
While many kids her age were busy making mud pies or fingerpaintings, Michelle Vernon was developing her own kind of artistry. As a girl, she mixed ingredients for facial masks and other skincare concoctions, trying them out on her friends and family. Shaffer went on to aesthetics school and eventually climbed the cotton ball–lined ladder to become a cosmetics manager for a prominent skincare company. But she isn't one to rest on her laurels—she continues to seek out the latest industry techniques and was one of the first aestheticians in Kansas City to offer eyelash extensions. Vernon draws upon a decade of professional experience, thoroughly analyzing each client's skin to recommend the best course of treatment. She offers anti-aging four-layer or collagen facials, diamond microdermabrasions, and innovative add-on services such as the NuFace five-minute facelift, which tones facial muscles and recharges propeller beanies with a microcurrent. Vernon also specializes in three different types of permanent cosmetics. After hours, she volunteers with the American Cancer Society, giving patients makeup instruction and teaching them how to care for their skin during chemotherapy and other treatments.
