Betty Stuart always had a talent for documentation. After graduating from Northwestern University's prestigious Medill School of Journalism in 1940, Stuart applied her shrewd journalistic eye to the field of photography. As she took on more professional jobs, she honed her skills behind the lens and learned how to blend into the background of weddings and other events so as not to interfere with candid moments.
Before long, Stuart joined forces with her husband, John Boyd Rodgers, to found Stuart-Rodgers Photography. The nascent company soon added corporate, commercial, and school photography to its list of services and, due to high demand for the couple’s innovative journalistic approach, expanded to three locations throughout Chicagoland. Today, Stuart-Rodgers's team of professional photographers maintains elements of Stuart’s original photographic vision in every shot, including her knack for capturing angles that draw attention away from subjects’ unflattering tentacles.
Black Label Boudoir's founder and photographer, Dina Sampras, highlights the distinctive beauty of each of her clients through elegant and relaxed private boudoir sessions. Subjects are put at ease by Dina's reassuring guidance as they slip into alluring lingerie or camouflage-colored rain ponchos to create gift-worthy photographs for anniversaries, birthdays, and weddings. As clients shift from pose to pose, Dina captures the most flattering angles using natural lighting and contrasts tailored to the situation, resulting in muted color or black and white shots that are truly unique to each client’s personality and sensuality.
Dina caters to clients with individual packages and pinup parties that spice up girls’ nights out by helping each woman unleash her inner, domesticated spirit tiger within the company of encouraging pals.
Julie Kaplan's fascination with cameras began when she was 12 years old, when her grandfather taught her about f-stops—the mechanism that allows photographers to control how much light enters the lens. Over the years, she developed in-depth knowledge of both traditional and digital photography. Now, she shares her skills with clients at a boutique North Shore photography studio, where she works to create a low-stress environment at photo shoots. The portraits Kaplan captures reveal her subjects' personalities and show the affection that family members or couples feel for one another. She also travels to snap shots in scenic locations or during special occasions such as bar mitzvahs.
