  • The Circuit Bouldering Gym
When some bouldering enthusiasts crossed paths at a local Portland-area gym, they found they all wanted to expand the area's bouldering options. So they founded The Circuit Bouldering Gym, a facility focused on community building, where like-minded people can pursue similar passions in an encouraging and safety-conscious environment. Today, Circuit encourages visitors to try new things and push the limits of their comfort zones. Boasting three of the largest bouldering-only gyms in the world, they also designed many of their simulated climbing stations as top-out boulders, letting guests experience what it's like to actually climb outdoors. Additionally, they instruct guests with programs such as 90-minute intro courses, advanced clinics with professional climber athletes, and programs tailored for kids including birthday parties, after-school programs, and summer and winter-break camps. The third and newest location in Tigard offers a state-of-the-art facility with over 19,000 square feet of bouldering and yoga. All yoga takes place at the new Ganesha and Hanuman studios at Tigard, and all locations also have a full weights area, allowing for workouts and CrossFit training.

  • Planet Granite Portland
When the climbers of Planet Granite say that community anchors everything they do, they have a history of outreach to back it up. After Castle Rock State Park appeared on California’s closure list, Planet Granite’s team quickly organized a fundraiser to save the sanctuary. They pledged $10,000 in matching funds, threw an auction, scheduled guest speakers, and obtained support from companies such as REI. In one night, they raised $20,725. This kind of response has typified Planet Granite’s team since opening its first facility in 1994. One of the first climbing gyms in the country, Planet Granite has expanded with gyms in Portland, Belmont, San Francisco, and Sunnyvale. The diverse array of climbing resources at each location led Popsugar to name the gym conglomerate one of the top five in San Francisco in 2011. At the Portland location, members scale 30,500 square feet of climbing walls that soar up to 55 feet high. And, bouldering includes both high-ball and top-out climbing. In keeping with their commitment to community, the staff tailors instruction and climbing routes to every ability level and affinity for hand sweatiness. They also supervise each gyms’ fully equipped fitness centers, which provide a peaceful counterbalance to the full-body workout of rock climbing.

  • Double Decker PDX
Spotting a double-decker bus outside of London is a rare treat. It's a treat Double Decker PDX founders Brooks Thompson and Kent Metcalf wanted to share with their fellow Rose City residents, which is why they brought a cherry red double-decker bus over from London. Rather than keep it on stationary display, they renovated it and transformed it into a venue on wheels complete with refrigerators, an oak bar, and a stereo system. Now, the double-decker bus transports revelers on pub crawls, to weddings, or to tastings at local wineries, in addition to other special events.
