When the Marietta Concert Orchestra began in 1951, the acoustics of its performance space weren't as impressive as they are today. Founded in the music room of the Moor family's home, the orchestra's skill and reputation increased until it had outgrown both its location and its name. Now performing most regularly at the Marietta Performing Arts Center,
the Georgia Symphony Orchestra is often joined by the GSO Chorus, which sings pieces such as Carmina Burana so the violinists don't have to use Frampton-style effects pedals.
Antonio Wingfield loved turning his designs into wearable realities—but he didn't love the fashion world's narrow standards of beauty. Looking to explore the deeper meanings of fashion, beauty, and the politics surrounding both, he developed a unique concept: using garments to tell a story. Wingfield co-founded The Fashion Opera with Darnelle Sanders, and the two set out to do much more than showcase clothing. The interactive theatrical experiences aim to challenge perceptions about aesthetics, a mission in keeping with Wingfield's belief that "a garment has the power to uplift the spirit."
Donna Angel loves music. Her passion has led her to perform with a case of food poisoning—with the help of a pre-med student to hold her up until the curtain fell—and it led her to break into a Texan church to use its piano. In fact, her life has revolved around music, and since it led her to joy, she created a way for music to impact the lives of others just as much. Nearly three decades ago she founded the Capitol City Opera Company—an outlet for local singers to display their aria-exploring skills while taking on some of history’s favorite works.
