  • Christmas Mountain Village Skiing
The activities at Christmas Mountain Village change throughout the year, even as the peaks and rolling hills surrounding it reveal different aspects of their beauty as seasons change. In summer, a 27-hole championship golf course sends players swinging right down the middle of the resort. Outdoor pools and hot tubs sparkle throughout the grounds, while canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats float on the surrounding natural waters. Warm days are also filled with mini golf, sand volleyball, and horseshoes. When winter covers the mountainside in snow, it's time to ski—either downhill or cross-country. Fifteen downhill runs range in difficulty from complete beginner all the way up to double black diamond. More advanced snow-masters can practice tricks at the terrain park. It's a lot to explore in one day, but thankfully, the resort offers many lodging options: including cottages, log cabin rentals, and an RV park and campground. There's also Mulligans Bar and Grill, an ideal place to warm up by filling your mittens with cheese curds.

  • Devil's Head Resort
Surrounded by the glacier-formed peaks of the Baraboo Bluffs, Devil's Head Resort lures visitors to South Central Wisconsin year-round with the promise of natural escapes from the bustle of city living. The resort originally opened in 1970 with a 92-room hotel, 10 ski runs, four chairlifts, and a number of bars and restaurants, although it has since expanded into a modern winter haven by adding a conference center, six additional chairlifts, more hotel rooms, suites, and condos, and a slew of new runs. Currently, the 500-foot-tall mountain features 30 newly widened runs ranging from bunny hills with two Magic Carpets to beginner-friendly slopes to double-black-diamond trails. To ensure that the powder remains fresh and pristine throughout the season, staff members groom each slope twice a day using snow groomers and fine-toothed combs. They even use PoleCat high-capacity snow-making machines to blanket the mountainsides when the weather conditions are less than ideal. The 300 acres of skiable terrain also includes a fully stocked terrain park—complete with jumps and grinding rails for skiers and snowboarders—as well as a 3.5-mile cross-country-skiing loop that idyllically winds its way around a snow-covered golf course.

  • Highlands of Olympia
Five trails descend down the slopes at Highlands of Olympia, ranging from the beginner-friendly bunny hill to the East Bowl, a black diamond that challenges advanced skiers to face the biting winds as they carve through the incline. The mountain also features a terrain park where snowboarders grind over rails and boxes, and tow ropes pull inner tubes up the hill before they are released for a speedy 1,000-foot-long descent that covers a 60-foot vertical drop. A half-hour’s drive from downtown Milwaukee, Highlands packs a day’s worth of entertainment into the neatly packed snow, from the onsite bar and restaurant to lessons in which instructors impart the secrets of picking up ham-radio signals with outstretched ski poles.

  • Mount Bohemia
No ski lessons. No beginners allowed. All ungroomed terrain. Averaging 273 inches per year, Mount Bohemia is a snow-covered haven for seasoned skiers, eschewing bunny slopes for 500-plus acres with two chair lifts filled with 90 runs—most of which are rated for experts. The mountain's 900-foot vertical drop, noted for being the tallest in the midwest, has won it many fans, including MSN Travel, which named it on its list of 10 Undiscovered Ski Spots in 2006. They were also rated number one for best powder skiing east of the rockies by Powder Magazine.
