When Roald Dahl wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he imagined a much-coveted golden ticket that granted access to myriad wonders and unveiled the inner workings of an entire industry. MetaBody created a real-life version of that ticket with the MetaBody Yoga & Fitness Pass, though it applies to fitness instead of candy. The pass grants access not to a single gym but to classes at a variety of local studios, specializing in everything from yoga to boot camp. With the freedom to move from location to location, students can sample different regimens, instructors, and styles of exercise to cobble together a program that fits their needs and goals. MetaBody's nutritionists supplement class packages by coaching clients in healthy eating, recipe cooking, and speed-reading nutrition-fact labels.
What makes it great: chandelier-lit studio, classes that focus on High-Intensity Interval Training, fully-loaded Schwinn AC indoor bikes, Indo-Row Studio Rowing Machines that mimic the dynamic resistance of a rowboat, and eco-friendly shock-absorbing bamboo floors
Since its inception as a nonprofit organization in 1985, Community Rowing Inc. has guided more than 15,000 students in invigorating rowing sessions held on the Charles River. Their experienced staff of Olympians and coaches helps students to become familiar with industry-standard boats and rowing machines through comprehensive introductory lessons and extended handshakes with the rowing arms. After gleaning the skills necessary to properly use equipment, students gain access to locker rooms, training areas, and any additional courses on the Charles River. The full-body, calorie-burning workouts are available throughout the week, allowing students to learn essential techniques such as sweeping, sculling, and dealing peacefully with the water road rage of aggressive gondoliers.
Climbers cling to the carefully placed hand grips, strategizing their way up the side of the rock-like cliff. They have come to Watertown to conquer the Central Rock Gym's 27,000 square-foot climbing wall, reaching 48 feet in height. The facility features climbing walls that range from beginner to advanced levels. Experts guide novice climbers through introductory classes, including the required beginner's class, or supervise more seasoned members scaling the walls' highest heights. Memberships unlock access to all five facilities, gear for the first month, and the use exercise equipment and weights. In addition, memberships grant access to fitness areas, yoga classes, instruction, and other benefits.
Rowing machines. Free weights. Pilates equipment. Treadmills. One could probably burn a few calories just by reading a list of Empire Sports Club's training arsenal. DIY exercisers of all ages can work through custom training regimens on strength and cardio machines before breaking things up with a game of racquetball.
Empire Sports Club also has plenty of class instructors and personal trainers on-hand for guided workouts as well. Casey Castine applies her more than 15 years of dancing experience during group Zumba classes, while Kim Izzi draws on a BS in nutrition. The club's full-size boxing ring, meanwhile, serves as Tom Fallon's classroom. Mr. Fallon boasts a resume almost as impressive as his right hook; he won Golden Gloves in 1984 and 1985, back when the Earth's gravity was 10 times what it is today.
At bodyco, instructors help clients of all fitness levels meet their individual goals with personal training sessions and group fitness classes. The foundational Intro to bodyco class teaches the fundamentals of fitness, helping beginner-level students gain confidence in completing basic exercise routines. Intermediate and advanced clients can take part in boot camp classes, which incorporate interval training, strength training, and bodyweight exercises and make use of equipment ranging from free weights to bands. Classes are held both indoors and outdoors, and can include dragging sleds or flipping tires. The gym's other classes run the gamut from boxing sessions to cycling and rowing classes.
