Within the indoor archery lanes at Tallahassee Indoor Shooting Range, arrows leap off their bowstrings, disappear behind curtains of speed, and reappear at their destinations with mighty-and-satisfying smacks. Eight such lanes exist inside the range’s 30,000-square-foot warehouse facility, each one strewn with targets and decoys at odd intervals along its 30-yard length. Once archers have gotten comfortable slinging their arrows from a stationary position, they can move on to the interactive deer-hunting trail, where they’ll take aim at moving deer targets hiding within the facility’s indoor forest.

Talon Range is a testament to the do-it-yourself attitude of Co-Owners JD Johnson and Charlie Strickland. The two law enforcement officers design and build leather concealment holsters by hand, in addition to having transformed 100 acres of Tallahassee into an outdoor gun emporium, complete with ranges, training facilities, and competition areas. Here, they teach classes in pistols, tactical shotguns, and carbines, for which they authored much of the materials used.
A former marine, Jason Knowles has spent a decade on SWAT teams and executed fugitive apprehensions and high-risk property searches. Today he helps soldiers, law-enforcement officials, and civilians expand their firearm and self-defense skill sets at Hard Target Security Group. In classes, Knowles and his team demonstrate how to safely wield weapons from basic handguns to shotguns and cover topics such as home defense and the proper use of pepper spray. They also teach their students how to capitalize on the startle-flinch reflex in their the S.P.E.A.R. self-defense system, a strategy for close-quarters combat. Outside their facilities, the team assesses the security of valuable assets—such as homes and yachts—or furnishes its clients with security cameras and thermal-imaging technology.
