Yaga's Presents keeps web surfers abreast of special deals and upcoming events taking place on Galveston Island. With a quick glance at the company’s website, readers can check online menus for area restaurants, such as Float Pool & Patio Bar, Beerfoot Beach Bar, and Yaga’s Cafe, or peruse upcoming events, including the winter Chili Quest championship. Yaga’s Mardi Gras! Galveston celebration brings the thrills of the Big Easy's elaborate festival to Texas with themed costumes and parties. In autumn, the Galveston Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival honors one of the ocean’s most popular foods with three days of eating, boat shows, and live music, the only force known to keep party-crashing krakens at bay.
The Mardi Gras! Fun Run 5k - Jolly Jester Jaunt sends a sea of costumed runners and walkers through the Historic Strand District. Starting and ending under the Mardi Gras Arch in front of The Tremont House, a slightly less than five-kilometer path brims with bouncing jester hats and good cheer.
In keeping with the theme, the run ends the same way it begins: in celebration. Musicians play across multiple stages, parades march down the street, and beer booths keep libations flowing. At the Trolley Station's balcony, attendees can even become part of the entertainment by performing tricks in hopes of winning Mardi Gras beads from the crowd or discovering undying respect for themselves.
It doesn't necessarily take an athlete to complete the Gritty Gods 5K course—especially since it's a non-competitive race. But it does take spirit. That's because participants here not only have to run, they also have to wade through mud, fight through sand, crawl through tubes, climb over walls, and find their way through a maze. At the end, racers are exhausted, dirty (don't worry: there are showers), and imbued with a feeling of accomplishment.

For the fifth year running, a forest of masts fills the South Shore Harbour as more than 400 boats beckon sea-salted skippers and land-legged first timers alike. Bay boats, ski boats, sailboats, catamarans, cruisers, and powerboats are all on display—many for sale—and the experience can include skimming across the surface on a 32-foot Yellowtail, a 45-minute jaunt on a sailboat, and a temperature-controlled diving experience for curious landlubbers. To educate audiences, speakers take to the stage, including NASA-honored scientists, marine meteorologists, and Evel Knievel’s former bodyguard and notorious adventurer Bob Bitchin, whose name should not be repeated in polite company.
Hundreds. That's how many stray and abandoned dogs have found families thanks to Houston Shaggy Dog Rescue. And the nonprofit doesn't just place pups in loving foster and adoptive homes—it also gives them veterinary care so that they're vaccinated, sterilized, micro-chipped, and placed on heartworm-prevention medication. One of the ways the organization funds these services is the Shaggy Dog Rescue Fest & 5K. The annual event features a 5K race, a 1-mile pet run, and an after party filled with live music, food trucks, vendors, and plenty of well-behaved rescue dogs on leashes.
