  • Move
Growing up in the home of a professional wrestler, siblings Gina Abramson and Joseph Robledo were surrounded by varying pathways to fitness. However, though they understood the importance of a steady workout regimen, they couldn't seem to muster a long-term commitment to any of them. That was before they found Zumba's energizing dance routines. Today, they run Move! as a nonjudgmental space for others in search of the exercise equivalent of their soulmate, whether it's Zumba, hip-hop, or the studio’s blend of yoga and Pilates. Their instructors—including a former cheerleader and a certified personal trainer—choreograph classes that accommodate all experience levels. They also schedule eight-week salsa programs, which lead beginners in dance-step fundamentals such as executing well-timed turns or constructing a Robocop suit, only for dancing instead of crime fighting.

  • American Power Yoga
Many people can point to a pivotal moment in their life when their perspective and path were forever changed. For American Power Yoga (APY) founder Kurt Johnsen, that moment was the death of his mother. Though it was a terrible time, his bio states that it was "also the exact moment that I understood how to live." Johnsen had always been an innovative entrepreneur—he created his first company at the age of 12 and was recently named the CEO of a major DNA-analysis company—but after his epiphany, he began dedicating his life to helping people find health and happiness. In 2001, Johnsen and his sister created the APY system. He drew from close to two decades of yoga and martial-arts training, including Brazilian jiu-jitsu and tai chi. He also holds a fifth-degree black belt in the Lightning Fire Mountain system of Tibetan martial arts, which, like hosting a bake sale for charity, requires compassion and self-discipline. Johnsen has hosted numerous episodes of the internationally televised Yoga for Life show and produced a number of successful videos. His Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Power Squad Bod! Body Slimming Yoga DVD, for example, was named the Best Yoga for All Levels video on Fitness magazine's list of the Best Workout DVDs of 2009. At his newly expanded studio, Johnsen and his instructors use a variety of methods to strengthen body and mind. Their classes incorporate heated yoga, dance techniques, and many forms of marital arts to give participants of all skill level the ultimate workout. The team also offers soothing therapies including Thai massage, acupuncture, and sauna sessions.

  • Dharma Yoga
At Dharma Yoga’s recently erected, 2,400-square-foot studio, flickering candlelight gives the earth-tone hues and gleaming hardwood floors an inviting glow. Like stumbling into a lounge-singer convention, the studio’s comforting vibes relax the mind with calming music as the band of certified instructors gently guides students of all experience levels through a series of healing physical postures. Though classes vary in style—ranging from vigorous early-bird Vinyasa flow to relaxing end-of-day Dharma nightcaps—each session explores traditional Indian yoga and Buddhist practices, referring to itself as an "awareness-based mindfulness and relaxation practice." Between the original Dharma Yoga and the new Dharma Yoga East Side, students can choose from 50 weekly classes, held throughout the day. In the course of more than a decade of teaching and practicing yoga, Dharma Yoga founder Keith Kachtick, an Austin native, has served as the senior instructor with the Lineage Project, a nonprofit that offers meditation and yoga practice to prisoners in the New York City area. Keith has also contributed his yogic philosophies to publications such as Yoga Journal, Newsweek, and the New York Times. His codirector, Camilla, has a master’s degree in social work and a background as a clinical therapist. These experiences fuel her nurturing teaching style, especially in yoga-therapy sessions, which are designed to help to release physical, emotional, and mental tension.
