  • Dancers Studio
More than 25 years ago, Marcy McHenry founded the Dancers Studio to put her 30 years of dance experience to good use. The studio’s three ballrooms spread out over 6,500 square feet of arm-flinging, leg-kicking room. Upon the shiny, lacquered hardwood, a staff of trained instructors guides students of all skill levels through ballroom, Latin, social, and special-event dance routines. During group lessons, the instructors cultivate a noncompetitive atmosphere where their pupils can thrive in styles such as the tango and west coast swing. In private lessons students can fine-tune techniques or learn extra-challenging new steps during one-on-one time with an instructor. Those looking to show off their new moves can get down on Thursday evenings when the studio's DJ Topher spins a variety of tunes for pupils to kick their heels up to for an hour. The studio also encourages dancers to maintain healthy physiques in Pilates, Zumba, and yoga classes. Clients can sculpt long, lean muscles and strong cores in a Pilates session, or get heart rates thumping in Zumba classes that play energetic Latin tunes.

  • Sweatshop Health Club
Gayle Winegar founded SweatShop Health Club to help guests find time for fitness and combat the notion that exercisers simply want to enhance their looks. Instructors focus workouts on Stott-style Pilates instruction, helping students sculpt strong torso muscles on spring-loaded reformer machines, wunda chairs, and mats during classes filled with isometric exercises. Certified instructors and personal trainers shower students with one-on-one attention, helping cultivate more motivation and positivity than a piñata filled with protons. The teaching team rounds out the schedule with boot-camp-style short-burst training, dance-fueled Zumba routines, and other calorie torchers, learning their craft at the studio's Stott Pilates training center, which transforms advanced exercisers into effective teachers. The studio also offers childcare during selected classes, helping busy parents release stress and pent-up balloon animals.

  • Michael May Music
Michael May remembers the moment that kicked off his love affair with music—it happened on Christmas morning when he was 12 years old. Kneeling beneath the tree, he unwrapped an unusually large gift that turned out to be a Kay acoustic guitar. He started taking lessons, and before long, he was lugging that guitar to house parties around town, where he and his friends covered riffs by bands such as AC/DC and Cheap Trick. Music was entwined in every part of his life; he studied under lauded jazz guitarists, earned a bachelor's degree in music from Wayne State University, and married singer-songwriter Rachel Kurtz. Now, Michael helps students find their own passion for music at Groove City Guitars in St. Paul. He works with students on reading music, posture, picking, and strumming. Eventually, Michael's students learn to improvise using rock, blues, and jazz techniques.

  • Caufield Clay Works
For more than 30 years, Kevin Caufield has been fortunate enough to pursue his passion full time. A founding member of the Northern Clay Center, Caufield regularly teaches wheel-throwing classes and clay workshops when he's not working in his own studio. In addition to classic techniques, he also educates curious artists in hand-building, raku, and primitive firing techniques—such as wood-firing, a new project he's recently embarked on after finding some super flammable wood. Couples can experience a romantic and unique date through workshops that include wine and chocolates, while friends and frenemies can enjoy BYOB classes.
