After purchasing his first DSLR camera, Gary Detonnancourt made the common mistake of investing in expensive equipment before learning to use what he already had. Eventually realizing that his gear was only as good as his understanding of it, he became a self-made expert in the art of digital photography. He went on to become president of the Northern Rhode Island Camera Club, and he now draws on years spent as a science teacher to explain to students how light works and why shining a laser pointer on something is hilarious. That same experience has caused him to apply a hands-on philosophy in workshops and online programs as well as lessons in studio photography, fine-art printing, and Photoshop. The shutterbug also appears at weddings to capture special-day grins, and portraits of young children beg for space in photo albums next to teddy bear–hunting licenses.

Low-pressure private sessions allow enthusiastic teachers to fine-tune individual students' techniques and form, using their expert eyes and mechanical dancing shoes preprogrammed to do the Charleston. Patrons can learn how to cavort through classic waltz and fox-trot romps or swivel through the modern steps of salsa, swing, or samba. There is so much to LOVE about my job! But, the best part is being constantly creative and sharing my passion and skills with amazing people from all different backgrounds and walks of life. * What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer? *
Our customers are great, supportive people who have shared many a kind word with us. But, there are two reactions that stick out above the rest. One was when a young women left her last class of the session, she hesitated at the door and said, This is so much more than just sewing, this course has done more for me than seven years of therapy. *Of course I began to cry. We are a sewing and art studio but our main goal is to have people leave the studio feeling better than when they came in. I'll never forget that day. Another women who shyly started her first class to then end up taking all of them said, *My favorite place in the whole world was Disneyland until I found The Creative Sewing Studio. Which was a Huge complement because she is really into Disneyland._
